I know I’m way past due on revealing my kitchen. With book edits and soccer season and a few unfinished jobs around here, it sort of got put on the back burner, although we’ve been enjoying it. Yes! really enjoying it!
Then Christmas came. And a reader wrote to me and she encouraged me to share the details. More people are doing work on their homes themselves, partly because of the economy, and also spurred on by DIY television shows and blogs. So, yes, it only seemed appropriate.
What I especially think is nice about your blog is the patience that came through…perhaps that’s not what you felt…but that is what came through to me. That serves as inspiration to others. We live in a world where people want the beautiful remodels that they see on TV and they want it now.

Ha! Want it now? It only took us 6 months to complete our kitchen, but that’s okay. The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where we all hang out, get fed, talk, catch up, and solve life’s problems. I believe that this can be accomplished in any kitchen, because this last summer while our kitchen was gutted, we set up a camp kitchen in the garage. It wasn’t perfect, of course, in fact by the end of 4 months we were sick of it! But we still whipped up our meals, talked, worked together, and did the dishes by hand.
Our kitchen being discombobulated did not take away from the fact that we were still a FAMILY!
(Soccer team coming for dinner – before the floors went in!)
Why we remodeled
When we bought this house, we found out later that many other people we knew had looked at it, loved the house, property, etc. but couldn’t wrap their mind around what to do with the kitchen. It was small, didn’t flow well, and just needed updating after 30 years (kitchens were built smaller back then). The wonderful people we bought it from even had kitchen plans drawn up – so they were on the same page as us. And for resale down the road, it was a smart move, especially since we did so much of it ourselves (and we had the GIFT of my Dad)!
We had a tiny center island, old vinyl flooring, and laminate counters.

Recessed ceiling with florescent lights.

Tiny kitchen window.

Anyone who had been in our house would tell you this: Only a few people could comfortably fit and move through our kitchen at the same time! We had to be creative in how we entertained, or set up a buffet, or weigh how many people could be in the kitchen. When my sisters came to cook dinner with me, you can see here the small area that we had to work with.
And the original stove (don’t ya love those burners?)
New plans – big space
Finally the time came when my dad drew up NEW plans and got us going on the project (he’s a retired contractor and very good with design). We took down 2 walls to make one big open space. We moved the utilities out to the garage. We did it during the summertime when the kids could help and be a part of the project.
Home Depot – they worked with us
I can’t say enough good things about Home Depot. Kandace helped design the space and followed us through the project, getting us the best buys. I worked with them, they worked with us. Let me explain.
1. After the kitchen was designed, we took our plans into Home Depot, but the bids came in too high for what we could afford. I knew I had to do my part to get this kitchen within our budget. I went from one cabinet design to a lower-priced brand. We decided on Corian versus granite. We decided not to get all new appliances, but to use what we could salvage from our old kitchen. We had a set of cabinets (desk/book shelves) taken off of the bid because we decided to put something else in that place. (To the right, where a desk is currently sitting.)
2. We made many cuts to get this kitchen in our price-range. Then we went back to Home Depot and asked what they could do for us, showing them what we were willing to do. Our goal was not to have the most expensive. Our goal was to rebuild a functioning kitchen that was efficient and that had a good flow to it, within our price range.
3. I will say this: Home Depot gave us great discounts on our whole kitchen. We were thankful and impressed not only by how they worked with us, but how personable they were, and always available!
So what’s my philosophy? You may not have a perfect or beautiful kitchen, but don’t let it stop you from opening up your home to others. If you have a family, don’t rob them of the blessings of inviting and connecting with other people! Yes, I am blessed with a new kitchen. But I look back to the past 5 years in this home, and how lonely our family would have been if we hadn’t reached out. Small space and all.
Come back tomorrow for Part II as I’ll be sharing about the things I just knew I had to have – the things I didn’t pinch on!
In the meantime, I’d love to hear if you have a “good flow” through your kitchen area, or would you design it differently?
Oh, and by the way, we did NOT keep this beauty. We took out the intercom system … Thank you all who commented and gave me great advice!
(What’s the recipe we’re making above? The same thing that we’ll be making our Dad for his birthday this Saturday. I may just have to post about this German dish!) And I’m linking up to Kimba’s DIY Day with this post!

Your kitchen is beautiful and this series couldn’t come at a better time.
Wholly Cow…we are in the process of beginning this process. We knew our kitchen needed work…and now 4 years later the appliances are going…and so is my patience. I have grand plans…but they are being reigned in by common sense and cash. Although my kitchen is far from a showpiece, it has not stopped me from entertaining and inviting friends over regularly. For the re-do, I just wish I could squeeze another 3 feet from somewhere so I could have a big island. Our flow is almost too good…the kids play chase in circles all day long…

Hi Holly, well, I cooked on ONE burner for a long time, and it didn’t stop me! I just didn’t focus on my kitchen and put more emphasis on the meal and the people. Thanks for sharing your story!

Sandy,
As always you encourage me through your posts. Thank you for this one, I’m looking forward to the follow up, when time allows.
I know I suffer from wanting to have our kitchen done now, and so we’ve never begun! Hubby said he thought I wouldn’t make it through months of remodeling without becoming irritated with the process. Ours would definitely be a practice in patience.
However, an imperfect kitchen has not stopped us from being hospitable. I would certainly like an update for a better flow, too.
Again, thanks for the encouragement.
Peace,
Lynne

Oh Lynne, your husband is right! You will become irritated with the process! LOL. Try writing a book during that time, too … not too fun. I’m glad it’s behind me. Time to enjoy. Let us know if you begin your remodel! And use Home Depot! They rocked!

How exciting!!! Two things in your post really hit me – the first being the fact that the kitchen is the heart of your home. It is where everything happens! Secondly, I love how you talk about your Dad and how he helped you! It so reminds me of my relationship with my Dad.
On to your question – I would change the side that our garbage disposal is on. I would have it on the side of our dishwasher. Other than that, our flow is great – we have an informal eating area, an island and it works great to be the heart of our home!

Thanks for sharing, Kim. Yes, I was very blessed to have my Dad help us. It was a neat way to spend more time with him, too.
It sounds like you have a great kitchen yourself!

Beautiful! I bet you love to be in there now! I am in the home stretch for my kitchen. I am trying to be patient, but, oh dear, it is hard!

Yes. Patience IS a virtue. We did one kitchen remodel before this one, so I had a bit of a warning. Can’t wait to see your kitchen, Annie!

Oh, it looks beautiful. I also feel such a sense of pride when we’ve done projects ourselves or saved our family money. Great job & I can’t wait to hear part 2.

Hi Duchess, yes, it feels good to save our family time and money. It was hard work for the kids, but they will never forget the L O N G process

WOW!
I know you probably did the wall elimination thing first….but in what order did you bring this beauty to completion? Walls, window(s),floor, ceiling…..then cabinets, countertop and appliances? What did you find was a “smart” way to get ‘er ALL done?

Hi Moi. You’ve got the process right. The smart way to get it done is to not feel too pressured. If that makes sense. I had to let the “time frame” that I thought it should be done in – Go! Because we were doing so much ourselves and relying on friends or family – the smartest thing for me was to learn to keep my mouth quiet. Oh, so hard! But I learned patience.
And now we reap the benefits!

I am so happy that you shared this.
I was JUST wondering about your kitchen and if I somehow missed posts about a full sharing.
Our house is 30+ years old too and we’re trying desperately to figure out what to do in our kitchen area. My biggest dilemma is cabinets. How did you decide on the finish? This is where I struggle the most. I love your choice and would love to know what made you choose them.

Home Depot. Really, they were the best. They helped me decide and chose something beautiful, in our budget. Oh, and I knew I wanted cherry because that is what I had in my last house and I love the look!
Thanks, Suzann!

Due to space constraints and layout, we didn’t do an island in our kitchen. I cannot TELL you how much we regret it.
Your kitchen turned out so pretty and I really enjoyed this post!

Your kitchen looks great. We are in the process of designing (I should say re-designing) our second phase and I’m kind of excited. Not sure when we’ll start, but it will basically be one big kitchen/sitting room.

I love having people in my kitchen. Right now, it’s a little tricky because the “Kitchen” is in what will someday be my utility room, but you can get a few people in there comfortably.

We redid our kitchen (all done by my husband, brother and neighbor) about 4 years ago. Still need to replace the refrigerator which is white. The stove/range HAD to go which is now stainless as well as new dishwasher.
Patience is a virtue.

Your new kitchen is beautiful! Loved seeing the pics! I’ve just done a couple posts about our kitchen makeover too. We’ve had plastic covering our torn out soffits, and our kitchen is *small* but that didn’t stop me from hosting a women’s brunch from our church recently! Yes, everyone went through the kitchen for a buffet! What this really did was cement for me what I already knew, that people really come to visit you to see YOU, not to dwell on the perfection or imperfections that are in our houses.
Blessings,
Stacey

We did a kitchen remodel almost two years ago, and it took us five months. And we WEREN’T doing it ourselves. So I’d say you should consider yourselves Superpeople.

We’ve made a lot of improvements to our customer service over the past year and I want to make sure the associates you worked with are recognized for the help they provided on your project.

That floral bowl you are mixing dough in….my mom has the same one! This is the first time I’ve ever seen another one. She uses it to mix up her biscuits. It’s been a part of our kitchen lives my whole life. Somehow that bowl is beautiful to me because it speaks of home, warmth, family & love. Wow, all that from one old bowl!
