Thank you for this post. My husband and I have really been trying to capitalize on spontaneously entertaining folks. Last week it was a fellow missionary who locked herself out of her house and needed dinner! What a great lesson you've taught us. Thanks ;)

Christmas dinner was spur of the moment for us this year! A blizzard kept us in town so we called a few people in the morning and afternoon and ended up with 11 around the table and some traditional food plus whatever anyone had on hand! It was wonderful!

That's great. I love friends you can be spontaneous with. I like to be spontaneous but I'll have to admit, I am not great at it when it comes to that kind of thing. I'm usually forced into it by my husband. You know men, or at least mine. He forgets to tell me about plans and then a few hours before mentions family or friends will be coming soon. UGH. Oh well, I guess it keeps me on my toes. :)

Please stop by my blog for my first ever (RED) Meatless Monday Linky party!!

We do a lot of spur of the moment, just not with other people! I think we're bordering on anti-social - maybe we'll break out of our shell in 2010! Thanks for the inspiration!

So funny you posted this. I was just telling a friend about a girl I knew when I was a nanny YEARS ago. She would call all of us church friends and say, "Let's have a 'why don't cha?' " The first time I thought, "What???" and she explained. She said when she was feeling spur of the moment, she found herself calling friends saying "Why don't 'cha come over for (fill in the blank - football game, dinner, lunch, etc)?"
So, she shortened it.
We always had tons of fun because the get together was about spending time with one another.
I have craved being spur of the moment like this again. Life's details seem to have consumed our family and I don't like it one bit.
So I am feeling a "Why don't 'cha?" coming on!

We had a party before Christmas that was totally spur of the moment. We sent out about 28 invitations via email for a spur of the moment party at the end of the week...thinking FOR SURE no one would be able to make it on short notice around the holidays. Much to our surprise, 25 people showed up! We've planned better in the past and had much less success...we LOVE spur of the moment! :-)

Hope you holidays were awesome and you are ready for 2010 starting tomorrow :-) Monday!!!

before we moved, I had a good friend who has 2 kids, my husband would travel a lot and she is widowed so, we would call each other and one of us would go over to the others house. We pitched in and both of us would do some part of the meal. Sometimes it was quesadillas or homemade pizza or even leftovers. It was just fun to do something spontaneous like that and best of all, we enjoyed each others company, and our kids played well, too. I miss those times. :)

Yep! Spur-of-the-moment totally works! For one thing, it helps to really take the pressure off things being "perfect", doesn't it?

I've noticed, too, that if you can't have those spur of the moment sessions with your friends (as in...if THEY won't have it) then maybe they aren't true friends after all? If they are too worried about being perfect and trying to impress you, then there's a chance that there's no true friendship involved. Does that make sense?
It does in my messed up mind! ;-D

I love spontaneity!! We used to always have spontaneous lunches on a Sunday after church.....at our place or different friends. Somehow there was always enough food! And such fun. We need more of this!!

I enjoy spur of the moment. I think it really takes a lot of pressure off...
We had a great evening with our kids last night. They called late morning saying they'd be over so I got the ingredients for stew. Eating stew and then watching Julie and Julia a great evening...(we pretended it was Boeuf Bourguignon)
A great movie to watch on a full stomach.

Just last week we did spur of the moment lunch with our friends after church. I think I almost like spur of the moment better, it seems more relaxed and fun! I like the idea of bringing dinner to a friends house too. Looks like fun.

We are rarely spontaneous anymore. When our teenagers were very young, we would call our neighbors (with two kids the same age) or they would call us, with "what are you having for dinner?" Usually neither one of us had thought ahead so we would just throw a potluck together and it was so fun! You have inspired me to try to inject some "spur-of-the-moment" back into our lives!
