I always love it when I’m reminded of an easy holiday recipe. Oreo Truffles have been around for years, posted all over the internet, and even on my blog a few years ago. But it’s good to bring them out of the archives, because this is a very easy, fantastic Valentine’s treat! And along with making these with our kids, since Valentine’s Day is two weeks from today, we can share tidbits of some valuable life lessons.
Imperfect is good
This recipe is so EASY for kids to make, in that they can use their own creativity by adding different flavors and decorations. My daughter, Abby, and I had to remind ourselves that how they turn out is not about perfection. I didn’t stand over her to see if they turned out perfectly round, or if they were dipped exactly right. She had success in making them her own (even though it got a little messy)!
Teaching our kids that imperfect is okay, is a great life lesson for them to learn at a young age!
Make and give away
What a delicious tasty treat to give away to teachers, grandparents or even neighbors. Make, decorate, package up and give away.
Random acts of kindness are other ways we can illustrate for our kids our love for the people around us. Learning this art of giving will change the way our kids act and think as adults.

OREO Truffles
18 oz. package of OREO Cookies
8 oz. package of cream cheese, softened
16 oz. semi-sweet baking chocolate, melted

(I doubled the recipe using ½ fat-free and ½ regular cream cheese. I also used dark chocolate, which I bought in the bulk section at our local grocery store.)
Mix cream cheese and crushed (fine crumbs) Oreo cookies together

Roll dough into 1 inch balls, putting on wax or parchment paper

Refrigerate for 30 minutes
Dip balls, using toothpicks or a spoon, into melted chocolate (use double broiler or microwave on 50%)

Refrigerate another 30 minutes until chocolate hardens

Decorate and devour! Or package them up and give them away!
I think we’ll be sharing this tasty LOVE with others by passing some out ourselves this year.
When’s the last time you thought of a valuable “life lesson” to share with your kids, grandkids, neighbor kids, or nieces and nephews in the kitchen?

Hi, I'm Sandy. Five years ago I stocked up on beautiful glasses from the Dollar Store. As I started writing about dinner parties, I realized that this “icon” portrays a great message.

This is one of my favorite recipes! I don’t like the cake balls, but these are incredible!

If you hurry to Trader Joe’s, they still have some of the candy-cane (peppermint-flavored) New Joe’s on the shelf. Basically the same as oreos.
They would make a delicious variation. Yummm…..

My daughter’s a toddler, so life lessons in the kitchen mostly consist of things like “always wash your hands” & “stay away from the oven when it’s open.” There’s a lot that can be learned from just those two words of wisdom.

what a great lesson I have been reminded of Sandy! I don’t bake as often as I like with my kids, probably b/c of the whole perfection thing. I know my kids would love to make goodies like this with me…need to learn to let go sometimes.
a plate of these to a neighbor…would make ME smile!
love ya girl!

It’s so true…letting go of perfection and letting our kids just “be” in the kitchen is tough sometimes. I’m learning to let go as well and sometimes even just leaving them alone in the kitchen to figure it out (they’re old enough to do that (C:)

These look so yummy sandy! You always bring up the most thought provoking questions. Sometimes I don’t think about “life lessons” when we’re in the kitchen. Sometimes I do, but not as often as I’d like. I do look for opportunities though throughout our days or in the car (those are our best times and conversations). I just spent a ton of time of time with our oldest this week in the car to and from soccer games. We had some great conversations! Loved it.

Sandy,
Seriously…I could eat these like popcorn…. they are so delish!! The lesson about perfection is a good one, I sometimes struggled with that as a mom, when my son was growing up.
