Love is … 4 Giveaway Items That Will Refresh Your Soul!

Love is … patient, kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not proud, is not rude, is not self-seeking … (I Corinthians 13)

This beautiful passage is all-too-familiar to me, because I’ve heard it all of my life; I even memorized it as a child. It’s easy to read, but not always easy to live out – completely. I don’t know about you, but I really want to learn how to love more.

It’s easy to love when life is cruising along just fine.
It’s hard to love when life gets complicated and painful.

I have the above “list” posted on my refrigerator, as a gentle reminder as I walk by, of God’s love that is foundational for all other loves. It reminds me that true love gives itself freely as a gift, not as a bribe for something in return. It doesn’t bargain or manipulate or seek to control. It protects, trusts, and hopes.

And it captures my heart.

Today on RE, before we come together at the Relevant ’11 conference later this year, Tsh Oxenriender (Simple Mom), Ann Voskamp (Holy Experience), and I are giving away copies of our books, along with a gorgeous, springy apron from Debbie (The Hip Hostess).

Consider this giveaway a beautiful GIFT OF LOVE from the 4 of us to you.

Comment to WIN (one of these items) that I promise will refresh your soul:

• LOVE of EVERY DAY BLESSINGS. One Thousand Gifts, by Ann Voskamp: Learn how to embrace a lifestyle of radical gratitude and love. This book is a reminder of how to LIVE OUT I Corinthians 13.

• LOVE of HOME. Organized Simplicity, by Tsh Oxenreider: Truths about intentional living and organization. This book is a gift of love wrapped up in practical tips and insights about daily living.

• LOVE of HOSPITALITY. The Reluctant Entertainer: My book shares about the gift of hospitality. I believe that you will experience LOVE in a greater way if you learn to give of yourselves to others.

• LOVE of APRONS. Wearing The Hip Hostess aprons inspires and reminds us to love our homes, our kitchens, our families, and our guests. As we “tie one on” we can love by being grateful for all of our blessings.

ANSWER TO WIN:

What part of I Corinthians 13 captures your heart?

I’ve been thinking a lot about how love is not boastful or prideful. Why is it that we always think that we’re better than the person next to us? Lord, humble me in my position! And by the way, all of those books are on my reading list…and I don’t have any of them yet!

A couple of things stick out to me from this passage. First, I can’t conjure up this agape love on my own; it’s definitely a gift from God. Secondly, it’s always active. And lastly, the specific attribute listed that I need to be reminded of most often is that of patience- that this particular meaning is in respect to dealing with {difficult} people.

Love is not self seeking….that is the gift God gave me in how my husband loves me….he is so all about loving me. After a skewed family with abusive issues I never could have imagined that love could be like this…he truly reflects the Father’s love.

Love is not proud. Because it seems that many of the other attributes of love depend on humility. Being humble enough to slow down for another (patient), humble enough not to keep records of other’s wrongs. Humble enough to put others first (not self-seeking).

Thanks for the giveaway and the reminder of love’s attributes!

Yesterday was certainly lacking in the patience department on my part with my little guys. I’m printing this post out so I can meditate on it today as I try to be a more patient Mommy, and a happier wife when my hubby comes home! :) Thanks for a timely post!

Love does not keep a record of wrongs, I remember things and mull over them and that can lead to holding grudges. Which I hate when other people do it and don’t like to admit I do it also. God is always so good to us. He is keeping a record, our names are in The Book of Life.

I would love to be entered in your giveaway, thank you for being so generous.

Love keeps no record of wrongs…

When I re-married, a dear friend reminded me not to keep score. With children and an ex from a previous marriage, it is very easy to get caught up in scorekeeping or finger pointing. This does not do well for marriage.

I really try to focus on the “love keeps no record of wrongs”. I think many of us are too quick to remember past wrongs when disagreeing with our loved ones. The whole verse is pretty powerful.

PS. Just found your blog & I love it.

Love is not self seeking…having just entered year 3 of marriage, I have seen so many times over the past couple years when I am selfish and self-seeking in big and small ways. Thankful the Lord brings those to mind and helps me correct them.

Goodness, every part of the passage is so full. Today, though, my heart is drawn to “Love Rejoices in the Truth,” and I’m specifically thinking of marriage. Even when moments are rough, there is always room for rejoicing because there is always the truth about what True love is (from Him) and what Real love looks like (Christ and the church).

what stands out to me is the part… it does not dishonor others. That is easier to do when concerning family, friends, coworkers, but not so easy when we are surrounded by people who dishonor the name of our God or of us as a people because we are Christians. My flesh wants to fight back calling them names, it angers my spirit, I want to bring them down to size when they seem so puffed up in their beliefs. Our God doesn’t want us to dishonor them as we stand for our beliefs. I feel this is the hardest one for me to obey and learn to live. That and the people talking on cell phones that can’t drive right! I am REALLY supposed to honor them, THEM?

    “Love never fails…”

I remember being a teenager and reading in one of John’s letters that “God is Love.” Then I read this chapter in Corinthians that tell us what Love… that’s when I began to understand more about who God is and what He is like… and this is how we are supposed to live…

Love: as little girls we are captivated by it. As young women we are sometimes disallusioned by it. When it comes to my Savior, I am redemmed by it. The love in 1 Corinthians 13 that truly captures my heart is the simple phrase, “Love never fails.” So much of life is failure. That is why redmeption is so sweet. His unfailing love, overflowing, and wrapping around me. Is there anything more precious and captivating than that wonderful truth?

I guess the words that jump out at me is that Love always HOPES.

This world is very much in a hopeless state…without God.

God brings us hope through Jesus Christ. And this hope is not like the world’s, it is an expectation…knowing it’s going to happen.

I hope in my LORD. He loves me unconditionally. He give me hope.

Love – is so opposite of my sinful human nature! Love – patient, kind, not easily angered, keeps no record of wrongs, always hopes, trusts, perseveres . . . (thinking of my reaction to my husband yesterday) me – impatient, instantly angry, unkind, remembering past behavior, losing hope, giving up…). I really need to put this on my frig also! Love always perseveres

    Perseveres:
    Part of Speech: verb
    Definition: keep at; work hard
Synonyms: be determined, be resolved, be stubborn, carry on, continue, endure, go for broke, go for it, go on, hang in, hang tough, hold fast, hold on, keep driving, keep going, keep on, leave no stone unturned, maintain, persist, plug away, press on, proceed, pursue, remain, see it through, stand firm, stay the course, stick with it

All the synonyms describe the Love God has for us! ! He continues to seek us out to love Him.
It is also true of the relationship I have with my husband. Love is Hard Work! It’s a job – that lasts a lifetime (and for God…one that lasts an eternity)

I don’t know if I’ll ever get past “love is patient”. That stops me in my tracks every time. When I was about to go into labor with my second child(literally, about and hour and a half before), God spoke to me about patience during my quiet time. I looked the meaning up and found:

Patience is the state of endurance under difficult circumstances, which can mean persevering in the face of delay or provocation WITHOUT acting on annoyance/anger in a negative way; or exhibiting forbearance when under strain, especially when faced with longer-term difficulties. Patience is the level of endurance one’s character can take before negativity. It is also used to refer to the character trait of being steadfast.

God spoke so much, but I don’t want to make a blog post out of a comment. Thanks for the opportunity to share a little of our hearts here!

A certain lovely little 3 year old is discovering new & exciting ways to keep his mama on her toes….
Which leads me directly to “love is not self-seeking” because then I feel the need to point out all the good I HAVE done because that certain someone has used up every. last. ounce. of. me.

My husband and I keep VERY short records, soI feel safe in our relationship to make mistakes and learn and grow. I also need that short record in my classroom on a daily basis–some students need my extra effort to forget. :)

    Love perseveres. Love never fails.

No matter what we go through in life or our relationships, love perseveres. It’s an action verb. A decision and a commitment. It’s a covenant sealed by God. It’s the arms around you when the whole world seems to be falling apart around you. It’s the assurance when things don’t go as smoothly or perfectly as we’d like, there is still someone who L.O.V.E.S you.

And isn’t that what really matters at the end of the day?

In that knowledge and assurance the tingly, happy, warm feelings flow.

Love never fails. The reminder that Love is Who and not what I do. Love is He who first loved us, and He is always in the process of making us His. The more fully we are His, the more totally we love. I fail those I love. Those I love fail me. But Love never fails. I am so thankfully undone by this. Thank you, Love, for making us Yours.

And as I tried to think of what my most favorite part was, I got stuck on LOVE NEVER FAILS. If love never fails, then love will be patient. If love never fails, it will be kind. And so on. Love keeps no record of wrongs. If the Lord extends grace and mercy to us, we should extend the same measure of grace and forgiveness to others. Although, it is easier said than done most times. It is much easier to do when our mind stays focused on Him rather than focus on our woundedness. I would love to win a copy of the books. In one of the books I am currently reading it asked us to do an experiment with 1 Corinthians 13. In place of the word “love” you were to put your name and see if you could actually say that about yourself. Wow! That is a real eye opener and something to put where you will see it and be reminded of it daily.

Love does not seek its own….. My children (all 8 of them) and I are discussing this passage just now during our morning worship time. I expect we will be in this passage for a long time. So few words, but so ripe with applications, implications and expectations. We all seek our own; it’s part of our selfish nature. Dying to our ugly selves, now that is truly only possible through God’s grace through being conformed into the image of His Son.

    “Love always hopes.”
Oh how we need hope in this world. I look around and see so many friends hope…less. Love provides the “more” needed to cancel out the “less”. Love becomes that glimmer of light in a world that seems so very dark. When someone loves a hopeless soul, the voices of hopelessness pause, even for just a split second for them to hear “Okay, if someone cares, then maybe this will be okay.” Love always hopes… and provides hope. This is the section that speaks most to me and is often my reason for wanting to pour love into the lives of people around me… because we all need hope.

I am named for I Cor 13 – my mother was reading this passage in the hospital after I was born. She called my dad and said “Let’s name her Charity”, and they did!
So when my first daughter was born, I gave her the middle name “Love”. This passage is very much a part of our lives :)

What part of I Corinthians 13 captures your heart?

It has always been the part of love being patient, and suffering long. Oh how I want to never grow weary of loving, even when it is hard and I pray that God will give me this kind of love for all people…even those who feel hard to love sometimes.

Had you asked the same question a couple weeks ago, my answer would be different. I think what captures my heart changes with life’s stages and circumstances. Thankfully HIS love never changes despite what I’M thinking or perceiving. With what’s going on in my life right now, I’m thankful for His promises that love always hopes, protects and perseveres.

Oh boy, oh boy. I have to pick just one? Hmmmm… It changes as often as I do, growing, learning, loving more, sometimes less. I think, in this case, I’ll have to say perseveres. God’ s loving grace perseveres with me, and mine must do the same with others.

This verse still hangs on my closet door in my childhood bedroom.

Love always protects. This has really been on my heart lately in a new way. Love protects in obvious ways, but I think it also protects with words. The way we talk about other, build others up (especially our parents, husbands, kids), encourage them. Not that we have to pretend everyone is perfect, but be aware that we are protecting others’ integrity with what we say about them. It seems all aspects of love cover one another, and practicing one naturally brings out the others.

    Love always hopes…

Also, I love this passage in the Message:

    Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
    Love doesn’t strut,
    Doesn’t have a swelled head,
    Doesn’t force itself on others,
    Isn’t always “me first,”
    Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
    Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
    Puts up with anything,
    Trusts God always,
    Always looks for the best,
    Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.

…LOVE never fails….geeze, the entire passage convicts my heart, moves my heart and causes me to pause with each precious character of LOVE. I am not LOVE…I want to be, but I fall so very short and find myself picking up the pieces of my thoughts, words…deeds…that have fallen short of LOVE. I want to LOVE with all my heart and my soul. “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.” Sometimes I want so badly to evangelize other people but I find I am following my agenda, not God’s. As St. Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary, use words.” LIVING the Gospel is the most important thing.

I think what stood out for me is Love Protects.

    I’m sort of pondering that.

I haven’t really thought much about it. Protects, is there near the end, and all of the big concepts are out in front. I’m just thinking about what it is to love, and what it is to protect. I think I could do better with this in the Christian sense. Of course my children are protected, but am I loving and protecting others?

Thanks for making me think about that! LOVE the LOVE graphic!

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.” ~If I understand nothing else in the Bible but to LOVE the Lord, and to LOVE my neighbor as myself, then I know I will have lived a full life, nothing lacking.

My favorite part of 1 Cor 13–vs. 3 “And if I give ALL my possessions to feed the poor, and if I deliver my body to be burned, but do not have love, it profits me NOTHING.” Without Christ’s love flowing through me to others, everything I give up or sacrifice is in vain.

“Love is not… self-seeking”; or, in the ESV, it does not insist on its own way. If I am not patient, not kind; if I am envying or boasting, etc., I am loving myself and insisting on my own way. God kindly shows me so often that I am usually (always?) focused on just me.

Thank you for this great reminder, and for the opportunity to enter the contest!

Definitely fitting for the theme of hospitality – I need to always remember that my purpose is to have and show love to others.

What I recently discovered through a Bible study on this passage is that I Corinthians 13 is a chapter describing mature christian love. Love that is a verb. All the characteristics listed are verbs acted out on behalf of others. Immature love is a noun, wanting the action on behalf of ourselves. I think that is way that part that talks about when I was a child, a spoke like a child and acted like a child ( Love as a noun toward myself), but when I become a man, I put away childish things. ( Love as a verb toward others). It was so life changing for me :) !

    In Him,
    Beth

My first time on your site…. glad I stumbled here! “Love is not self-seeking.” It’s too easy to demonstrate “love” looking for favors in return (“you scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours”). This verse tells me that true love has a simple goal. Blessing the other person, content to receive NOTHING in return. No strings attached. Great lesson for this newlywed! :)

Posted on Facebook for another chance to win….. but most of all, just grateful for the incentive to stop and think about something so worthwhile! Thanks!

The first three verses – I find myself busy, busy, busy trying to be a great wife, mom, homemaker. . . But my attitude can really stink sometimes. It doesn’t take long for me to see the real state of my marriage, kids, and home. I can be “doing it all,” but if I’m doing it all without love – without a loving spirit – it is all for naught. My family (and God) would rather have less of the doing and more of the loving.

The entire passage is so relevant. The one I often have to remind myself of is love does not envy. In our community, it’s a land of excess. It’s very difficult to not want what everyone else seems to have. It’s also a lesson I try hard to impart in my children, so I have to be a good example. But it’s definitely a work in progress.

Love is not self-seeking. Truly thinking of others before our own self. Sacrificing just as Christ did. Yes, laying down our own needs, wants, and selfish desires that is true LOVE and only Christ does this perfectly. Thankful today for that.

Oops, I forgot to add my favorite part of the scripture. It’s ‘love rejoices with the truth’. Thanks for the chance! :)

Love always trusts and love never fails! So many people don’t fully trust love and therefore give up on it too easily. Including God’s!
