Friends, my kids are all home tonight and this mama is very happy! In preparation, I’ve made these delicious muffins, a big pot of Rotisserie Chicken Noodle Soup, and a giant green salad!

Sour Cream Pear Pecan Muffins

These creamy pear muffins are delightful.

The batch makes 24, and they are also easy to freeze!

Double the batch, and freeze a bunch, or better yet, give some away!

The Christmas season looks different now that my kids are older, obviously with less running around, fewer commitments, and I’ve learned to ask my family first about their favorite foods, party invites, and activities. It took me a few years to learn this, as I would totally overcommit our family, and now it’s a much more peaceful season. Thank God!

Let go of perfect.

I’m not sure what it is about younger mamas, but we just want things to be perfect, and not let our families miss out on anything.

Wisdom does usually come with age, and I’m here to encourage you this holiday season, if you’re on the younger side, to learn to say no to overcommitting yourself or your family, to honor your family by asking them what they want to do first (before you commit), and then (this is a hard one) … don’t wait for perfect.

You know, the perfect cards, outfits, parties, gifts. I still long for perfect, because it’s good to have a standard of excellence in all that we do. But when it wears us out, and drags us down (and our families), then we’re not really all that we should be for our families. Right?

I love starting off the morning with a cup of coffee, sitting by our magically-lit Christmas tree, feeling the cold air and soft bathrobe on my body with warm Duluth socks on my feet, intentionally making space for new thoughts, prayers, and ideas to come.

Anticipation.

Living in the moment, as I read and apply the Word to my life, and then I wait …

I anticipate and I wait …

Growing Paperwhites

For all things clear and lovely. (Yes, I’m anticipating these little bulbs to explode any day! I love Paperwhites. Here are tips how to grow them.)

It’s okay to say “no”

The power to say no, or to make a change in tradition, or to try something new, can really grow us up, and change and mature our families!

It’s not about how much we accomplish, dear friends, but more about what we teach our families in this crazy, chaotic season.

For me, I want to live in the present with intention, hope, and love for the Christ child and the promise that He brings.

How have you learned to say “no” to overcommitting yourself or family during Christmas?
