Sometimes it is in life’s simplest pleasures that we find our greatest joys. My husband and I recently created a backyard garden getaway space in the back area of our property, where we can sit back, chill, read, eat a meal, have a glass of wine—or just sit back and talk. We love the magical feeling of this space, often using it in the early morning or in the cool of the evening, as we’re surrounded by our neighbor’s evergreen firs, our hot tub, and a huge garden bed of potatoes behind us – and often a slight breeze.

Here’s how we did it.

The pool is on the other side, and we used what we had on the property to tie it all together.

Fourth of July.

Of course I have it decorated for the 4th of July, but it will also be our cozy spot to just sit and contemplate, when we need peace and quiet.

The deck was already there, we gathered our adirondack chairs, a tree stump for a table, bought a $20 Costco rug, hung some extra patio lights, and my husband made this adorable new coffee table out of free pallets from our local Grange.

I love the size, the height–with small pieces of tree limbs and a few screws—perfect for entertaining.

Backyard garden getaway.

It’s been a little getaway for our kids, too, as we’ve seen them reading and enjoying this getaway space.

I love to help others capture inspiration in their backyards. It can be done so inexpensively, whether you have a patio, porch, side area, a place to hang a hammock – to make your very favorite at-home haven.

Where in your house or yard have you created an “at-home” haven?
