Easy Mashed Sweet Potatoes with My Holiday Dream: Less over More
This Easy Mashed Sweet Potatoes recipe is delicious served with a dab of butter, and festive pomegranate seeds sprinkled on top!
Happy Friday, Friends! I hope you had the most wonderful Thanksgiving ever! Do you shop on Black Friday, or do you stay home with family and friends? We had a lovely Thanksgiving, with all of our kids home, plus our best friends from Portland joined us with their 3 little kids. Three big kids; three little kids. Oh, what fun! A full house, and a beautiful day.
I’ve been thinking about the next week, when I’ll be changing out my fall decor for Christmas. Two years ago, we put up our tree, and only strung white lights. It was pretty, freeing (not pulling out all the boxes of Christmas stuff), helped keep my home simply decorated that year, and it just felt right. Guess what? We had just as much fun with all the people who came into our home for dinners and parties. Just less glitz!
Stuff for Stuff’s sake.
Now don’t get me wrong–decorating for Christmas is essential. I, too, have some favorite things I love to put up that mean the world to me. Some are heirlooms, some are just fun stuff. I mention “stuff,” because this year, as I pull out the boxes, I am going to get rid of a LOT. I’ve written several times on my blog about downsizing, thinning through our belongings, and prioritizing what really matters (more connection, less stuff in my life). I came across this article, Buying Begets Buying: How Stuff Has Consumed the Average American’s Life, and I’ve read it over and over. It’s become my almost daily read, as I am really focusing on decluttering and thinning our possessions. We have a 4 bedroom house, and those closets at one time were packed to the gills. They are now less full, and in fact I think we could fill one closet with everything in all 3 closets upstairs. I’m on a mission!
I’m keeping this article in mind as I shop for Christmas this year. I’m focusing on what really matters (relationships – hey, wanna come over for dinner?), and what’s useful and practical, not just stuff for stuff’s sake. I am also trying to get rid of something “old” each time I bring something new in.
We shop because …
We shop because we’re bored, anxious, depressed or angry, and we make the mistake of buying material goods, thinking they are treats that will fill the hole, soothe the wound, make us feel better. The problem is, they’re not treats, they’re responsibilities, and what we own very quickly begins to own us.
I don’t mean to sound like a downer, this week of Thanksgiving, but seriously, the less over more concept is my holiday dream.
Are you wondering where to begin? Don’t. You know exactly where this journey starts. It starts with the stuff that makes you feel guilty, stressed or overwhelmed when you look at it. The clothing with price tags still on them, the toys no one plays with, the boxes and boxes of stuff you’re storing in your attic, basement and garage, just in case. Get rid of it–recycle it, donate it, sell it on Craigslist. And when you’re done getting rid of it, stop buying more.
Because when it comes to stuff, I promise you, you don’t need more labels or better systems or complicated Pinterest tutorials for organizing your stuff– all you need is less.
Easy Mashed Sweet Potatoes.
Now for my easy recipe today, one of our family favorites.
When I know I’m hosting, the day before or the morning of, I get the potatoes baking in the oven! The house smells so lovely!
Then right before company comes, I quickly peel the potatoes, add the extra ingredients, mash, heat up, and serve!
A lovely touch for the holidays is to put melted butter in the middle, and sprinkle pomegrante seeds on top! So pretty!
What system or plan do you use to not “over-shop” during the holidays?
Easy Mashed Sweet Potatoes
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
- 6-8 medium sweet potatoes
- 1/4 cup melted butter + 1/4 cup
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup fresh orange juice
- Pomegrante seeds (optional)
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place potatoes on a foil-lined cookie sheet, and bake for approximately 1 hour (depending on size) or until soft. Remove from oven; allow to cool.
- Peel the cooled potatoes; place in a bowl. (Easy clean up: When peeling the potatoes, place the skins back onto the foil. Gather the foil and skins together and toss.)
- Add the melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and orange juice to the sweet potatoes. Beat together with a hand mixer until lumps are removed. If needed, add more orange juice.
- Heat on the stove or in the microwave; serve with a dab of butter and pomegrante seeds on top!
