Friends, we had our first guests last week in our new home, and I served Granola Chocolate Chip Cookies – perfect for freezing and serving at any time.

When our dear friends came for a night last week, I was a bit nervous. You never know about the details of a new home–the sounds, comfort, temperature, etc., and then there is the question … where do your guests sleep?

You may have a guest bedroom, or do you give up your master suite for guests?

We’ve done both over the years, depending on the situation. This time, since our friends were coming for 1 night, my husband and I decided to give up our master suite, and let our friends try out our Reverie bed (here, and here).

Since our kids are home for the summer, our “guest bedrooms” downstairs are now occupied.

All the silly details … I can see why people get nervous when it comes to hospitality.

But … we really shouldn’t.

Hospitality is about making people feel warm, welcome, creating a space that is comfortable and inviting for them.

It is never perfect.

I learned a long time ago to let go of expectations that things have to be “just so”, because the desire for “perfect” only eats us up inside.

We’re not made for perfection, really, because it gnaws at you and lies to you and tells you that you are never good enough.

Everyone has their own style, so learning to be comfortable in your own skin is key, staying within your means, sharing what you have.

I like to think of it as keeping my eyes on the guests who are coming, and my heart in the right place.

It is all about them, and not about me.

Hospitality is not about how others do it, it’s about how you or I do it.

With a pure heart, a love for people, a desire to open our homes–make a meal, invite others in—it’s a beautiful thing.

Granola Chocolate Chip Cookies

I made up ahead of time our favorite Granola Chocolate Chip Cookies (the first cookies in our new house!), which, by the way, are very easy to pull out of the freezer for last-minute company!

On this evening, I set out the glass platter, filled it with cookies, and had it waiting on the table.

I had to pinch myself. It was so fun being in a new place, sitting around the table and catching up on life.

Showing hospitality isn’t always easy (there are so many different scenarios), but on this night, it made me really happy.

With milk and cookies, and with some of our best friends, it just felt right.
