Casual dining can be quite beautiful, even with just the basics. That’s what I love about outdoor entertaining and taking the space you have and making it work for you!

Folding chairs, and a splash of color on the table (love this aqua blue with red – perfect for the Fourth of July!)

We have several dining spots in our backyard, but our favorite is the side patio where the lights are hung in the trees.

Start off with appetizers.

Our back patio is a great place to start the party – with yummy appetizers!

casual entertaining

We love to take advantage of the beautiful, warm, southern Oregon evenings, perfect for parties – big or small.

A few weeks ago, I made these Sweet Onion Pizza Sliders to serve as an appetizer, to go with our Italian themed dinner, and they were a HUGE hit.

Lots of napkins.

They’re great for any “casual” party. I say casual, because quite honestly, they are gooey and messy! Just serve them with lots of napkins!

Sweet Onion Pizza Sliders with Delallo Pizza Sauce

Story of Delallo.

They’re rich, delightful, sweet and savory, and with Delallo’s Pizza Sauce, they have a flavor that you can’t get with any other sauce. Delallo has been around for a while, imported from Italy since the 1940s! I’ll be sharing more with you this year about this brand, but if you’re shopping and you see their name – buy it! Their products are like night and day compared to other Italian brand foods, in flavor, ingredients, and textures. They have pasta, gluten-free and whole wheat options, olive oils, olives, sauces, and delightful “saladsavors” (more info coming this summer!) Oh, and check out their awesome blog!

Oops moment.

So back to the sweet, savory Sweet Onion Pizza Sliders with Delallo Pizza Sauce – there’s only one ingredient I forgot to put on the recipe when I made it. And that would be Delallo olives. (Here’s everything you need to know about curing olives.)

Entertaining for me is not about perfection, and no one even knew! :)

What’s your favorite Italian appetizer to make?

TIP: Use an electric knife to cut the rolls in half horizontally! Don’t forget to line your pan with foil – they get messy! Make ahead of time and pour the sauce on right before baking.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. salami slices
  • 1/2 lb. prosciutto
  • 2 cups  mozzarella cheese, largely grated
  • 1 large package Hawaiian sweet dinner rolls, or 2 small
  • 1 cup Delallo Pizza Sauce
  • 2 tsp. dried basil
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 medium sweet onion, sliced and sautéed
  • ½ cup butter
  • 2 Tbsp. prepared mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds
  • cup brown sugar

Instructions

  • Heat 2 Tbsp. butter in medium pan. Thinly slice the onion; sauté in the butter for about 5 minutes, or until clear and cooked.
  • Leaving the (24) rolls attached, horizontally slice the tops off; set aside. Place the bottom (attached 24 pieces) rolls in a 9×13 foil-lined baking pan. (You may need to squeeze them into the pan, or remove a row if you choose:)
  • Spread the pizza sauce evenly on the underside of the TOP layer of bread. (Spreading on the bottom layer of the rolls will create a sogginess:) Sprinkle with the 2 tsp. of dried basil.
  • Next layer the meat, cheese, and sautéed onions, on the bottom layer of rolls (in the foil-lined pan).
  • Place the top section of the rolls, pizza sauce side on top, back onto the roll bottoms. OR bottom halves of the rolls.  It will look like a giant sandwich.
  • In a medium sauce pan, bring the 1/2 cup butter to a soft boil. Add mustard, Worcestershire, poppy seeds, and brown sugar.
  • Pour sauce over the 9×13 sandwiches right before baking.
  • Cover with foil and bake at 350 for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake another 10 minutes, Serve hot or cold.
