Strawberries with sour cream and brown sugar is one of those great summer desserts we can’t live without!

Strawberries Dipped in Sour Cream and Dark Brown Sugar

For me it’s a nostalgic experience, bringing back memories of camping trips and warm summer nights with fresh summer berries, family and friends. We called these bites, “Kelly Bellies.”

Now that strawberry season is in full swing, I think you’re really going to love this spread, if you haven’t already served it.

Maybe you want to try a cake instead, like this Tangerine Poppy Seed Cake with Strawberries recipe!

Friends, when I think of spring and summer, I think of sitting outside on our patio at our old house in Medford, enjoying the beautiful sunshine, sweet blossoms, hearing the pool pump buzzing, and birds chirping in the background.

These were great memories, right next to our epic strawberry patch (that I miss to this day). [See my How to Store Fresh Picked Strawberries post.]

Ingredients needed for dipped strawberries

  • Strawberries
  • Dark Brown Sugar
  • Sour cream (use full fat because it’s creamier, and adheres to the berries better)

This recipe is meant to be casual and immediate–dip and pop in your mouth–kind of dessert!

How to dip strawberries

In a bowl of rich, creamy (tangy) sour cream, dip the berry. Leave the stem on!

Roll the berry lightly in the dark brown sugar.

Eat and enjoy!

Keep on dreaming!

It reminds me of the sentimental side of C. S. Lewis.

You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. -C. S. Lewis

After a recent hike, my hubby and I sat and took in the view of the mountains and beautiful river in the valley, and we talked about our dreams.

These days we take resting, listening, and waiting very seriously. We both are healthy, we have a lot of energy, a lot to give away, and we feel new things are on the horizon. There’s so much to learn about our world right now, too.

Part of dreaming means that you are open to God actually stepping in and moving you.

a hand-dipped strawberry with sour cream and brown sugar

On a tasty, summery, sweet note, I want to share my favorite way to eat a strawberry, and the story behind it.

Strawberries dipped in sour cream and dark brown sugar

Growing up, we called this recipe Kelly Bellies. Because our friend Kelly showed us the trick. The year? Probably 1969-1970.

You have to start with beautiful, bright red, strawberries. I say use smaller berries. The problem with the extra large strawberries is, you’ll want to double dip.  If no one cares, go ahead and serve large ones. But for a quick dip for a large group of people–no double dipping allowed :) Use small berries!

Set out a bowl of dark brown sugar (yes, dark is richer and the best). Oh, or use coconut sugar.

A bowl of sour cream (yes, Greek yogurt works, too, but we love sour cream).

Then you start dipping.

I’ll let you experience it yourself, but if you’re entertaining, this is a fun, casual dessert to serve with individual dipping bowls.

ENJOY!
