Friends, we’ve lived in our new home one year, this week! Eek! We are beyond excited and feel so blessed for all the things that we’ve learned about ourselves this past year, as we ventured into new territory. We feel rich in many ways, and our hearts are full.

I mean rich, as in relationship-rich. Do you think about the people in your life, as adding wealth? Even though we appear to have everything, we are left feeling that something is missing, but are unable to identify what that thing is (5 reasons why people choose not to connect). But quite honestly, it’s relationships.

That said, living in a new town is not the easiest for getting to know people, and to be grafted into already established groups. I know what this was like, back home, having lived there 53 years. But I did feel it was a calling on my life to invite and include other people. I often did it when new people came to town!

We’ve been on a tilapia kick as of late. Have you tried Turmeric Ginger Farro Baked Tilapia?

You can make the farro (sweet potatoes, peas, and carrots) without the tilapia, but it’s delicious served together.

One thing we like about cooking with tilapia is that you can buy it frozen, and it still tastes great (unless some other fish).

Here are a few tips on making new friends, and becoming more social:

  • Start conversations with new people, and chat back with people who try to talk to you! Ask them where they are from, about their lives, about their families, or even pets.

  • Take time to talk to people you already know. Invest and grow that relationship.

  • Invite people to do things with your already established group. I find that people are reluctant to do this. I’m not sure if it’s out of insecurity, or they just don’t have room for new friends.

And as I’ve said before, if you’re new to town and really struggling with relationships, you cannot sit back and wait for people to come to you.

Go to where the people are!

  • 2 c. peas
  • 1 large shallot, minced
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic
  • 1 tsp. fish sauce
  • 2 tsp. ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh minced ginger
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes hashed into small pieces
  • 2 c. cooked farro
  • Tilapia: 1 lb. tilapia filets
  • Salt and pepper to taste, each side
  • About 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 small juiced lemon
  • Yogurt Tahini: 3/4 c. whole milk Greek yogurt
  • 3.5 Tbsp. tahini
  • 1/5 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. ground pepper
  • 4 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. garlic powder

Instructions

  • Roast sweet potatoes on greased pan for 10-15 minutes at 375 degrees.
  • In large pan, heat sesame oil. When hot, add garlic, shallot, and ginger. When partially cooked, add peas, carrots, turmeric, fish sauce, and salt. Allow carrots and peas to cook halfway before adding the roasted sweet potato and cooked faro. Stir all ingredients together and set aside, keeping the pan warm.
  • Preheat oven to 375. Wash and dry tilapia fillets. Place on greased baking pan. Sprinkle each side with salt, pepper, and chill powder. Squeeze lemon juice evenly on each fillet. Bake for 20-25 minutes.
  • Serve tilapia with faro, with a side of tahini dressing and fresh lemon.
