We just had this soup for dinner (minus the avocado since we were out) and it turned out lovely. My husband was thrilled, as he can’t have dairy and most broccoli soups use heavy cream or cheese. So thank you for this. It was surprisingly easy, and healthy!

What a wonderful post, your list hit on many of the reasons why I am a entertainingaphobe. When I have had the “courage” of having people over, no one has ever sad your house is horrible, your taste is horrible, your food is horrible and I’ve had a miserable. I usually feel better about my home for having people over – ah to have the courage to do it on a more regular basis!!

I am as speak forcing myself not to have a lot of the concerns that you listed. I feel that way even when family is over. It is sooooo stupid and limiting. I don’t look or consider those items when I go to someone else’s house. I am very casual and go with the flow. I just appreciate the people, pets, kids, food, plants—whatever.
As to the soup—-great idea to float the avocado.

I worry more about what others think when I invite someone over who judges herself harshly. I worry she won’t be nearly as kind with me as she is with herself – and these friends don’t handle themselves kindly.

I’ve done the “We must really like you – you get to see how we really live!” line, and explained away all the work we’ve already done on our fixer-upper (it’s obvious how much we have left). None of it necessary, friends are comfortable as long as they have a drink in their hand, a place to sit, and something to talk about. But in those situations it’s hard for me to get my mind off how I fall short. I’m working on it :)

Just Tuesday actually. I made a chicken and rice soup. Rather plain, but I was out of ingredients and without a car. I agree that soup is a great lunch idea. Lentil, split pea and ham, white chicken chili, broccoli cheese soup are my most favorite.
