My family has a slightly different version using the same noodle dough recipe but combining ground ham, pork, and veal for the meat filling. We call it mauschellen. We boil the “raviolis” and serve them in a bowl with some of the broth, adding a little milk and melted butter on the top. My great grandmother brought the recipe over from Germany in an area near Stuttgart. We too had this favorite for special family occasions. I have never come across anyone outside of our family who has heard of it.

I grew up eating this but have never tried it boiled, we always deep fried ours. I’m thinking this might be a little healthier version that the deep frying one I grew up with.

That is so very sweet to see your family Fun
I grew up in Germany and know this recipe from “Schwabenlaendle” near Stuttgart where it is called “Maultaschen” oder “Fleischkuechle”.
It can be made without the sausage, just ground beef well seasoned.
I never made it myself, but ate often, thank you for sharing this hearty recipe from good old Germany, you made your Granny proud!

When our family gets together my mom makes her famous Swiss Steak with mashed potatoes. It is so delicious. I bet your dad really loved having his daughters cook for him on his birthday:-)
