Hello, Friends! Today we’re sharing our favorite recipe that has been posted on the blog since August 2017. It’s my mom’s delicious Old-Fashioned Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream. My mom would have been 88 years old this week, which is hard to believe. She and dad made the best ice cream. Maybe you’ve already tried my popular, Millie’s Old-Fashioned Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream recipe.

Old-Fashioned Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream

Every summer we make and churn our own Old-Fashioned Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream at least for one potluck or gathering!

What are the ingredients to make homemade ice cream?

Gather these simple ingredients:

  • Eggs, half and half, and whipping cream
  • Brown sugar (which makes it so good), adn regular white sugar
  • Salt
  • Cocoa
  • Vanilla
  • Rock salt

What makes the ice cream it’s best is the ice/salt mixture and fat content of ice cream!

Right away I will tell you, there is NO sweetened condensed milk in this recipe!

Why we love Old Fashioned Homemade Ice Cream

I find myself now savoring the sweet affection our kids have toward each other as adults, delicious conversations, great dinners together (with this yummy Old-Fashioned Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream). These hot summer days we will cherish forever as we enjoy family dinners together.

It’s always great to talk about “heirloom” recipes, too. This recipe came from Millie, my mom.  This time we added cocoa, a delicious creamy chocolate-y dessert. For summer, there’s nothing quite like homemade ice cream (made with ice and rock salt).

As my Old-Fashioned Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream recipe always goes bonkers on Pinterest during the summer months, I saved these comments from a couple of readers.

Just wanted to let you know what a success your recipe was at my church get together last night. There were 3 of us ladies making homemade ice cream, all vanilla, and the one I made, your recipe, won, hands down. It wasn’t a contest, so to speak, but mine was almost completely gone, and the other 2 were barely touched! The brown sugar really makes a difference. Thanks again.

I made this ice cream and we fell in love . It’s so easy to make and delicious too .it is a favorite go to meal. I will definitely be making it my go to recipe for ice cream. 5+ stars.

Old-Fashioned Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream

I can’t help but think back to my kids being little people. I always thought, these are the moments. And they were! (photo 1998)

But now, as we sit around the table at night, life is even sweeter now than it was then.

How can that be? We all grow, mature, and learn to love each other more.

How do you make Old Fashioned Homemade Ice Cream?

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl; beat together on medium with a hand mixer or stand mixer for 1-2 minutes.
  2. Fill the ice cream freezer and make according to appliance directions, layering a lot of ice and rock salt, until the machine shuts off.
  3. Immediately remove the paddle; place the lid back on. Cover with more ice and a heavy towel until ready to eat (so ice cream continues to freeze and set).

How long does it take for the ice cream to be set?

It takes about 30 minutes up to an hour for the ice cream to be “set.”

July is my birthday month

Being my birthday in July, here’s my newborn picture 59 ago! Wow, have baby pictures ever changed over the years! Now newborn shots are staged and beautiful, where 59 years ago, a quick … SNAPOO, with the nurse holding your head. HA.

I’m so grateful for my mother and father. I had the best role-model-parents. My mom (remember infant seats–above), and my dad was always the family photographer! My dad was the one that churned the ice cream, while we girls would sit on the tub as it got heavier and heavier to turn.

If my mom was alive today, I think she’d love this post today :) And seeing how big the kids are now! Mom is smiling down from heaven, we know! :)

So we end our meal with a creamy bowl of ice cream and it’s sooooo good served with this Basic Texas Sheet Cake Recipe!

You may also serve it with these BEST Chocolate Hazelnut Brownies and drizzle on top my BEST Homemade Chocolate Sauce!

ENJOY! Happy almost-August!
