This past week I went on a hike, and I was stretched outside of my comfort zone. The end result: facing my fears, reaching the top of the butte, and enjoying a delicious yogurt breakfast–thanks to my friends at siggi’s dairy.

My story today is about how I conquered my fear of hiking, heights, and slipping on rocks. If I had known that my morning hike with my husband and our dog, Haggis, would be so “scary,” I don’t think I would have gotten out of bed.

Having recently moved to central Oregon, my husband and I decided to go on an early morning (and secluded) “date hike.” What started out as an easy hike to Lava Butte, with outstanding views and a cinder-covered trail that encircled the rim of the cone, turned into a two-hour adventure for our four feet and four tiny paws.

Heading out, I packed the backpack with our favorite breakfast food and a thermos of coffee. I packed siggi’s yogurt cups, homemade zucchini muffins, and a small amount of granola and fresh blueberries.

We took what my husband characterized as a “shortcut” to the top. We took the trail below, and although I knew it would be a challenge, little did I know how much I would have to conquer a fear of mine.

I can sometimes work around my fear of heights. But this time, it got the best of me. I was afraid of sliding on the big chunks of lava and rock and falling to the ground far, far below. I felt like such a baby. But, hey, living requires taking chances, right?

My husband kept me grounded, walking me through each minute of misery…

Baby, you can do it. Hug the right side, grab onto the big rocks, don’t look down.

20 more yards, we’re almost to the top.

Concentrate on one firm step at a time.

10 more yards …you can do it, Baby!

Finally, we made it to the top, having taken the steepest and most challenging route. It felt like a full day’s work out, and I was totally exhilarated and exhausted. It took some time for me to calm down and breathe normally!

After I caught my breath, my husband, Haggis, and I settled into the wildflowers and awed at the beautiful panoramic view. We were the only ones on top of the butte — one with nature — ready to celebrate with our favorite coffee and breakfast foods.

siggi’s yogurt was perfect to bring along for our hike. They’re just the right size to fit into a backpack and don’t weigh all that much, despite the fact that they’re packed with protein. siggi’s is our family’s newest favorite yogurt because it’s thick, made with simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar, and is all-natural.

We learned about siggi’s when our daughter came home from college this summer. She introduced it to us when we were shopping in downtown Bend. It’s made with milk from grass-fed cows, and the yogurt contains no artificial preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, flavors, or colors! After we tried it, our family was hooked. We love keeping extra siggi’s in the fridge for when we have company, as healthy and simple snack options for outdoor activities, or just as a quick breakfast. Some of our favorite flavors are strawberry rhubarb, black cherry, and coconut, but on this hike, I had the best of the best flavor: mixed berries.

On our hike, I learned that doing something scary could actually be a healthy thing! It stretched me and ultimately felt good to push myself. It was exhilarating, and it made me feel strong.

Living requires taking chances. And sometimes that means being scared, taking those risks one firm step at a time.

What have you done lately that really stretched you to face your fears?
