This is a simple and delicious treat that can be made in a pinch. We recommend a heavy bottom skillet that has high walls for safety (no grease fires please)! You’ll also need a thermometer attached to the side to monitor the temperature of the oil.
15ozsunflower or canola oil or vegetable oil, or enough to fill the bottoms of a small Dutch oven 1”
Nutella or jam for serving (dipping), optional
Instructions
In a small Dutch oven or a similar vessel with high walls, heat 1 inch of oil to 375° F.
Prepare the sugar mixture: In a shallow bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. Set aside.
Cut the tortillas into the shapes or sizes (triangles) that you want to serve.
Prepare a sheet pan with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Fry 4-6 tortilla pieces at a time for about 30 seconds each side. Using a slotted spoon to flip the tortillas and place onto the paper towels. Remove from oil and let the excess oil drip back into the pan.
Immediately dredge or sprinkle tortillas with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Transfer to a wire rack until ready to serve with Nutella or another sweet condiment.
