Friends, Happy Tuesday! We have several dinner parties on the calendar for this month, plus we’ll be hosting Thanksgiving next week! When I start to feel that pressure of so much to do, I sit back, refresh my mind, and remember that every day is a gift. We’ve been given a certain amount of hours to get things done, and it’s up to me to be wise with my time, and organized.
Even though all the planning for entertaining takes time and energy, it’s actually very exciting and fulfilling when the guests show up and all the hard work has been done, and you can sit back and relax with your company, as soon as dinner is served–right?
Right for some, wrong for others. I’ve heard women share horror stories with me about how clean up after dinner parties is a nightmare. That ought not to be!
My tips today will guarantee you get the kitchen cleaned up in no time:
Holiday Clean-up Dinner Party Tips:
1. Clean as you go. As you cook and prepare, make sure and wash the pans, put the dishes in the dishwasher, wipe the counters.
2. Do dishes as you serve. As you serve the guests, or for each course (depending on how you serve your dinner party), immediately rinse and put the dishes in the dishwasher, or hand-wash the items. It only takes a few minutes, and frees up more counter space. For example, after the guests enjoy their salad, bus those dishes, rinse, and put them in the dishwasher.
3. Bussing dishes. Don’t be afraid to ask one or two guests ahead of time to help with bussing dishes! We hostesses can become resentful if we don’t ask ahead of time, and we feel saddled with all of the work.
4. Dish duty. Be in charge of your own kitchen! Know what can go in the dishwasher and what needs to be washed by hand, and make sure the kitchen help understands that. For stemware and special entertaining pieces, have cleaning tools, such a Scotch-Brite Clean Curve Dishwand, filled with soap, ready for easy cleaning! Have a fresh new dish pad (I like to use these, versus a clunky dish rack) and kitchen towels, to kick off the holiday season! Give clear direction to your kitchen help, get a system going of what needs to be hand-washed or what can go in the dishwasher. Work together, and get the job done!
I personally love to fill up my sink with hot sudsy water. But there’s another option: With my new favorite Scotch-Brite Clean Curve Dishwand, you can wash as you go, without a sink full of water, and without having to get your hands in the mess!
The unique pad shape fits perfectly inside each glass, and is also great for washing other dishes , for getting the tough-to-reach spots.
Another great aspect of this tool is its under-the-handle soap-release button for easy dispensing–you can easily see the soap level. You twist the cap on for easy refilling. It’s great, and it does not leak! This has become my best tool for fast, easy clean-up.
So for holiday clean-up when entertaining, I’m glad I have a system down this year, and I’m going to ask for help. Seriously, friends, I hear of so many resentful hostesses that feel they have to do it all.
Be organized this year, be assertive and ask for help. Make sure you have good kitchen cleaning tools to get the job done quickly and efficiently, so you can relax and enjoy the rest of the party!
For me? I set up a jigsaw puzzle each year, and I can’t wait to take off my apron, and head to the puzzle table, with a cup of tea! And, visit with my family and friends.
Do you ever find yourself resentful as a hostess? What tips can you share for lightening the load of after-party clean up?

I have even gone as far as to consider not hosting at all over Halloween until Christmas. I loathe after party cleaning (and this is coming from someone who sells professional cleaning products for a living!). I don’t mind doing the odd glass wash or a quick vacuum after entertaining, but after throwing a big bash it can sometimes take me a full day to get the house looking normal again. Anyway, just wanted to say thank you for some helpful albeit common sense tips that have given me the confidence to consider hosting again this year!
Those are such a good tips, as it is a typical issue for the housewives, as beside all the holidays and it’s fun, in the end, there a a lot of dirty dishes waiting to be cleaned and that is just so amazing if you have easier way to clean them and do it properly with this site.
This is such a brilliant dish and glass cleaning idea from Scotch Brite! I am really impressed and I definitely need to get one! I love to have guests and to throw parties at home with friends and family. The problem is the after party cleaning! It is just so overwhelming. Once I hosted a New Year’s party and then was the most horrible cleaning that I ever had to do! Thank you for the great tips! :)
Great post. I try and clean as I cook…I don’t always clean up throughout the eating process, usually I just wait until everyone leaves. I don’t mind and I’d rather sit and visit. Sometimes my family will jump in and do some clean up but I don’t worry about it too much.
great tips Sandy!! My husband is great about helping after we entertain, and call me weird, but clean up doesn’t bother me lol
I love the Scotch-Brite Clean Curve Dishwand……it helps me keep my hands out of the water a little more.
As long as you let me wash, I’m good! lol
