Warm Connections {Day 24}: Friends Who Build You Up & Bush’s Beans Giveaway

If you want to change up your menu a bit for Thanksgiving this year, you’re going to love this post today! (And a cool giveaway.)

Recently I was in Montana with these friends, who I consider very “warm” friends. I never dreamed I’d have friends all over the country when I started blogging 5 years ago, the connections being far more than acquaintances. This group in particular is like family.

(Cheryl, Katie, Aggie, and me) :)

What are warm friends? When there are feelings of acceptance, love, lots of hugs, smiles, laughter, compliments, invitations, conversation, and encouragement.

Today I want to share with you Jeffrey Saad’s Cumin Chicken with Bush’s Black Bean Stuffing recipe. It’s fantastic and a different alternative for Thanksgiving next month.

It even tasted better cooking it in the great outdoors. (Here’s Jeffrey and his beautiful wife, Nadia, with Aggie, from Aggie’s Kitchen.)

Are you comfortable cutting up a whole chicken? We got a great lesson from Jeffrey on how to cut a chicken. (That’s Aggie, again, proud of her accomplishment.)


We did get a little silly (Mm-m-m, that would be Tidy Mom.)

And then we did some grilling. We had 2 variations of the recipe, both turning out fantastic.

The taste and flavor from tossing the tortillas on the grill, and mixing in with the peppers to make a “stuffing” was brilliant!

    Yes, I learned how to cut up a chicken in a home ec course in college. I stood in front of the class with a chicken and a knife and the professor explained how it was done as I cut it up. Never have forgotten that lesson!

    My favorite chicken and bean recipe would have to be White Lightning Texas Chili. Yummo!

    I have cut up a chicken before, but not well. : )

    My favorite way to cook chicken and beans together is to put chicken breasts in the crockpot and cover them with salsa and black beans. Then I shred them either over a big salad or in tortillas.

    I do know how to cut up a chicken, but I confess, I don’t do it very much!
    I love to add black beans, rice and chicken broth with my cooked chicken! Thanks for the chance!

    I can cut up a chicken, sort of! The hardest part for me is getting the leg away from the thigh without shredding the meat! Ha! My favorite recipe with chicken and beans is chicken tostadas. I used diced or shredded cooked chicken, black beans mashed up so they’re like refried, and lettuce, tomatoes, onions, jar taco sauce, all over heated tostada shells. My family loves these and they are quick and easy.

    I have cut up a whole chicken before. I am not very good at it but I have done it. As for making beans and chicken I have not done anything other than just the plain beans with a grilled chicken on the side.

    Sad to say I don’t know. I should learn b/c it’s a lot cheaper than buying one cut up most of the time. I think I need better knives!

    My favorite bean recipe is either red beans and rice in the crockpot or homemade refried beans, either from canned or dry.

    I can’t cut up a chicken. We always end up with the weirdest pieces when I try, that and a “butterflied” finger or two on the cook.
    I’m hopeless!

    I’ve never cut up a chicken and I’m not all that sure that I would want to. My husband and I do not like dark meat. Using a whole chicken seems like a waste to us.

    I can cut up a chicken… didn’t we all learn when we started buying those whole cooked chickens from the grocery store?!!! I make a recipe called Pam’s cans….it’s a mexican layered dish…easy and tastes great!

    I don’t know how to cut up a chicken because I have been a vegetarian for most of my life! But I love the sound of this Black Bean stuffing (and stuffing doesn’t necessarily need to be “stuffed” to be yummy!). The only Bush’s beans I’m familiar with are the baked beans — which I love!

    I know how to cut up a chicken; my grandmother taught me when I was about 10 years old. But I don’t do it because the whole bone-breaking sound gives me some serious heebee-jeebees!

    Sadly, I do not know how to cut up a whole chicken!

    My favorite recipe using beans and chicken is probably white chicken chili. It is a really popular dish around here (in East TN) and is served at a very popular restaurant. I am happy to report that I can make it at home for a fraction of the cost!

    I do not know how to cut up a chicken but think it is time for me to learn. I don’t combine chicken and beans very often and the recipe you feature sure is a winner. I will try it!

    As a mom of five, I definitely know how to cut up a whole chicken. When my kids comment on how gross it is, I tell them to get a good job so they can afford to buy chicken pieces. :)

    I can cut up a chicken if I need to, but I’m not great at it.

    We eat black beans several times a week at our house. We love them! The most recent thing I made was chicken nachos with black beans for lunch. In just a few short minutes, they were all gone!

    I know how to cut up a chicken, but if I cut it up I can’t eat it. Weird, right?

    My favorite Chicken and beans recipe is one I toss together after work sometimes. Cut chicken breast into cubes, saute, add diced onion and sometimes bell pepper, then add a cup or two of rice and continue to saute until the rice has a little color. Add salt, cumin, a can of diced tomatoes, diced green chiles, a can of Black beans, water and whatever spices I think are needed. Cover, simmer until tasty. Eat with cornbread!

    I do not know how to cut up a chicken, a little scary for me. My fav easy recipe for chicken is equal parts of left over chicken cube, black beans, brown rice and cooked corn off the cob. Top with a little sour cream and salsa–YUMMMMM. Healthy and easy my two favorite things!!!

    If I am put to the test with a map and a new set of kitchen shears (my broke) I can definitely do it. Without the map – forget it!

    My current favorite meal with black beans and chicken would have to be enchilada stew. So delicious, and i haven’t made it for a while….hmmm….definitely time to put it on the menu.

    Oh, and black beans are my favorite! I pretty much substitute them for most recipes calling for pinto or kidney beans.

    I actually used to teach foods at a University and taught how to cut up a chicken. My most memorable class was when a girl in the front row passed out cold when I separated the leg quarter from the body.

    I know how to cut up a chicken, but I could use more practice! My favorite chicken-bean recipe is a layered southwestern salad: lettuce, shredded chicken, black beans, corn, diced red peppers, shredded cheese, salsa, seasoned sour cream, avocado ~ so easy and so good!

    I have absolutely NO IDEA how to cut up a chicken! I feel bad that I don’t, and I get the breasts already pre-cut in the grocery store. I like to make homemade burritos or nachos with black beans–I add a tortilla, lettuce, tomato, guac, salsa, perhaps some sour cream, and red peppers…mmm I’m getting hungry! Yay for this giveaway :)

    My Mom taught me years ago how to section a whole chicken. I’ve only done it a hand full of times since, unfortunately. May need a refresher course ;) Cooking chicken with beans… I’d have to say the beans w/ rice take side dish for my enchiladas.

    I can honestly say that I have never cut up a whole chicken. When I was 4’ish I used to watch my grandparents butcher chickens. They used to always show me the little eggs that were being formed. (Too much info?!?)

    My favorite bean recipes, hands down, is crockpot Calico Beans! I was so excited to make them last week when the weather cooled down. Yum! It is a recipe that all of my children love, too. You can’t beat that.

    I am too intimidated to cut up a chicken! I’m fine roasting them, making tons of different recipes for all the different parts but can’t bring myself to cut one up…

    And I don’t cook with beans, my husband does not like them at all. I love all the bean recipes you share though, it gives me hope that I can eventually make something with them!

    Yes, I do know how to cut up a chicken. My mom taught me when I was young. She taught me to always have a very sharp knife and where to “feel” for the joints to get the perfect thigh and leg.

    This recipe looks tasty. My favorite bean recipe is pinto beans with bacon, onion and jalapenos.

    I do not know how to cut up a chicken…sadly, but my husband does, so I’ve always deferred to him. I was a houseparent at a children’s home for the last year and all we got were whole chickens. They intimidate me — all I can think to do with them is roast them!

    My favorite recipe with beans and chicken has got to be some Southwestern crock-pot throw together using whatever’s on hand — a good reason to keep beans in the pantry at all times.

    Sadly I have never learned to cut up a chicken. Finding the head stuffed inside the chicken when I was an exchange student and at Girl Scout camp in Cyprus I have never cared to touch another whole chicken for fear of finding another head stuffed inside the cavity. Over the years I have actually developed an food allergy to chicken so I do not cook it any more; therefore no beans and chicken recipe. I do love to cook with beans in my Mexican meals and in my crockpot soups. Mmmmm.

    I have had a few opportunities to learn in “chicken classes”, but just couldn’t bring myself to go. I still use skinless, boneless breasts….I know wasting money, but just can’t go the cut up myself route. I use Bush’s Great Northern Beans in White Chicken Chili; and Bush’s Black Beans in Santa Fe Chicken.

    BTW, didn’t you just love Paws Up, and Crackle is fabulous. I live down the road a bit in Missoula, Montana.

    Oh my … I love Jeffrey, and loved him on Next Food Network Star. Glad he has his own show now on the Food Channel. How cool to be friends. The recipe sounds so yummy.

    As for your questions …. hmmmmmm …. Can I cut up a whole chicken? I have done it a time or two, but the results weren’t the same as when my mama does it. And I do not have a recipe that combines beans and chicken.

    I don’t know how to cut up a whole chicken.
    I love to make frito boats w/any kind of beans. Tortilla chips or Fritos on bottom, any kind of warm beans on top, chopped onion, shredded cheese…lettuce anything you want. Yum.

    I have cut up a whole chicken before, but I just make it up as I go – so does that mean I technically know how ? :) ummm…I will go with yes. My hubby likes nachos with black beans and chicken – that is the only think I can think of that I have made that has both beans and chicken in it…but I love trying new recipes and this one looks very yummy!

    I cut up chickens all the time, but I don’t know if I’m doing it the right way. It works for me anyway and the chicken’s not too upset about it. It still gets eaten!
    My favorite dish with beans and chicken has to be Asopao de pollo (Puerto Rican chicke stew) served over rice. Great time of year for it!

    I have never cut up a whole chicken -but I should learn , it would save us money and actually our boys like the legs and thighs better than the breast meat . We always add black beans to our taco salads and nachos. This is a great give away! .

    I love beans..like crazy love…in fresh salsas, as side dishes and my favorite -with grilled chicken and gooey cheese in an enchilada…I actually crave kidney beans sometimes & I will open a can, rinse them and- ahem- have a few spoonfuls… :) yes, my husband knows this! hee hee

    While teaching classes on monthly cooking, I was surprised by the number of women who didn’t know how to cut up a whole chicken, so that became part of the class. With surgical gloves (these are always in my kitchen), even those who didn’t like to touch the meat were able to do it. It is the most economical way to buy chicken, and so versatile.

    Haven’t tried to cut up a whole chicken — but had a hilarious (and frustrating) time trying to “truss” a chicken once. I’ll try again until I can do it! Love that outdoor cooking for thanksgiving. In Louisiana it can be cold on Thanksgiving — or we can be wearing shorts!! Just never know!

    I can *almost* cut up a whole chicken but I get stuck near the end. Those bones, those bones…
    I don’t’ have a favorite chicken and beans recipe unless you count my famous chicken enchiladas that I serve with either black beans or frijoles a la charra…

    I am not a skilled chicken-cutter-upper, but we do make rice and beans with grilled chicken on a bi-weekly basis, using the filling for burritos, tacos, and enchiladas. They’re some of my kids’ favorite meals!

    I have chopped up a chicken a couple of times, although it grosses me out!! I make chicken stuffed peppers: peppers (prefer red), cooked chicken, beans, spanish rice, cheese. Its good, easy and I can make up a bunch to freeze, also I can omit the chicken for my veggie daughter :)

    Chicken, black beans, salsa, corn, spinach – Southwest salad – with a dressing of sour cream and BBQ sauce. Pretty healthy and delicious. Not so good at cutting up a chicken – can do it, but tend to get basic and quick by pulling the dern thing apart after cooking. Love the giveaway!!! Thx

    Forgot to add my favorite beans recipe using chicken. . . White Chicken Chili from the back of the Bush’s Navy Bean can. I substitute rotisserie chicken for this recipe so it’s fast weeknight meal for my family of 5.

    I love your blog…I learned how to cut up a chicken watching Food TV…haha. My favorite recipes include a Taco soup with lots of beans and I often use frozen vegetable protein, a ground beef substitute plan to try it with chicken now that fall is here. So glad you are working with Bush’s…love their beans!! And am glad they are giving you new “bean” recipes.

    My favorite beans and chicken recipe – I don’t like beans but my son loves my white bean and chicken chili, so I’ll go with that! (PS – he’s a huge bean lover, so if I win the prize package is all his except for the grill pan!!)

    Yes I know how to cut up a whole chicken- but perfer not to…bad childhood memories =)
    I make a 5 different cans of beans tri tip chili does that count?

    I do not know exactly how to cut up a whole chicken but I have seen it done on The Food Network :) I usually buy the rotiserie chickens for soup or fresh chicken already cut up.
    Right now I can not think of a recipe I make that incorporates chicken AND beans.

    Yes, I can cut up a chicken, learned from a friend at college. My favorite bean recipe is my sister Kathleen’s Baked Beans recipe. It has multiple kinds of canned beans, cheese and bacon. It’ s always a hit at family reunions.

    My grandma taught me how to cut one up (she grew and cooked her own), and I love shredded chicken and black beans burritos with lots of shredded mozzarella.

    So I knew there was a reason I sat down to check a few blogs before midnight hehe =) j
    yes, I know how to cut up a whole chicken….but it still kind of grosses me out =(
    My favorite recipe with chicken and beans would have to be the speedy southwestern salad.
    Romaine, cheese, corn, black beans, taco chips, chicken, and the dressing is 1/2 ranch 1/2 picante sauce. We make it mild b/c of the children =) So good, so yummy and so fast on a busy summer night when we’ve been out in the garden !
