Why Protein Shakes are a Healthy Breakfast
Almost every morning I drink a protein shake for breakfast, with whatever fruit is in season.
Right now, every morning, we head out to our strawberry patch and pick berries. Lots of berries.
One thing I wish we had done differently in our patch was to make rows where we could walk. But with limited area, we wanted to get the best use of our space.
I did, however, put our old cooler right in the middle of the bed, so I’d have a place to sit and pick around me.
It works!
Since it’s National “Vanilla” Milkshake Day today (who comes up with these dates and celebrations?) I thought I’d share my healthy vanilla strawberry “shake” recipe with you, using fresh Coughlin strawberries and vanilla whey protein powder.
Here’s a little info I found on the web. And actually, I’ll link to the entire site. Good information!
Whey protein is a particularly good source of protein because it’s pure, clean, and one of the most easily absorbed sources of protein there is. In fact, whey protein has the highest biological value (a measure of nitrogen retained for growth or maintenance) of any protein.
Whey protein comes from milk (it comes out during the cheese manufacturing process) and is put through a process that separates out the pure amino acids (all 8 essential amino acids and branched-chain amino acids) and leaves behind the sugar (lactose), fat and cholesterol. No wonder that healthy Miss Muffet is always eating her curds and whey!
Happy National Vanilla Milkshake Day! :)
What’s your typical morning breakfast, and do you make sure and include protein?

Smoothies for breakfast were very common for me during the school year, great for car ride to drop off the kids! I use whey protein too, fills me up perfectly, need to look for flax oil!
This is the second post I have seen about healthy breakfast shakes. (I prefer yours though!! ;) )
I think somebody is telling me its time to get shaking…..
Usually I eat organic oatmeal with fresh fruit and almonds. Not very exciting but I find if I eat this it will take me all the way to lunch without feeling hungry.
I like the idea of vanilla milkshake day. I might have to hit the DQ after church tonight!
What do you think of the high calorie count in protein powder? I used to always have a shake every morning, but have been going with more “natural” foods lately and was concerned about the high calories in the protein powder.
I’ve been doing an egg or 2 and some turkey bacon with a green shake or a bowl of fresh fruit recently.
Yes!! I second the protein-shake-for-breakfast idea!
Although I make mine with orange juice (for the potassium) and soy protein. And sometimes throw a banana in, too. Without the banana, you don’t even need a blender, so there’s less to wash (great for those mornings you’re rushing out the door).
It makes such a difference in your energy & hunger levels throughout the morning.
That’s funny that you mentioned the walking paths, as I looked at the first picture and before I started reading, I thought “Wow, that’s amazing….but where do you walk?”
wishing our strawberry patch produced a few more berries….
I LOVE smoothies… though I usually have them for snacks {http://bit.ly/JLqHyU}. I’ve never tried flax oil, but this is the 2nd post I’ve seen on it ~ so I look forward to trying it! Your garden is beautiful Sandy!!!
