Late Night Dinner with Salty Sweet Butterscotch Brownies Recipe
Salty sweet desserts don’t have to be over-complicated. In fact, with this recipe, Salty Sweet Butterscotch Brownies Recipe, is the perfect recipe.
It was after we got our kids off to their school prom that we came back, with another couple, for a late dinner.
I’d say it was last-minute, since we called them just a couple of hours before to make the invite.
It was such a lovely springy evening, the sun going down after a warm day, the party lights hung, freshly mowed grass and newly planted springtime flowers in the pots.
I realized late into the afternoon that I hadn’t even thought of a dessert. Not that we have to have dessert with each meal — we don’t. But being a weekend night, and since we hadn’t seen our friends in a while, I pulled out an old “salty-sweet” recipe called Butterscotch Brownies. You might think this recipe includes butterscotch chips–it does not. You actually make your own butterscotch. Do you know how to make butterscotch?
It’s the warm oozing combination of butter and brown sugar–dark brown sugar, that is.
On top of the gooey goodness, if you dust with sea salt (you can see it in this picture) it stimulates a whole bunch of new taste buds in your mouth.
I feel the best desserts have a little zip to them, other than sweetness, and that includes salt.
Which, by the way, you can get so many flavors of gourmet sea salts these days.
In specialty shops you can find just the right one that satisfies your taste for the perfect salty-sweet foods.
We were recently at The Meadow in Portland, Oregon.
My husband and I got lost in this unique store.
Back to desserts.
Salty sweet desserts don’t have to be over-complicated. In fact, with this recipe today, you won’t believe how easy it is, and perfect for entertaining! You make it up ahead of time, and right before serving, microwave each dish for about 30 seconds. Serve with a premium vanilla ice cream and your guests will be singing your praises.
Just give the “salt’ the credit. :)

I can’t wait to try this. If I only have regular brown sugar not the dark sugar. Will it work?
Looks yummy! Thanks for sharing and Congratulations to Michele L. for winning the Kitchen-aid prize pack! Yay you!!
These look amazing!! I am going to try them right away! I am visiting Portland for the first time in June….I will have to check out The Meadow.
Oh my Sandy! I’ll be making this one for sure for our next get together. (Or maybe tonight for our family night in.)
What a great combination, Sandy. My mouth is watering!
Thank you for a delicious looking recipe! I too have brown sugar on hand. I think I will make this Saturday! Great blog!
I am a total sucker for anything that combines salty and sweet — sounds amazing!
this sounds and looks awesome! I love butterscotch!!
Those look fantastic. I’m not a good last minute person – everything has to be planned – I’m not a fly by the seat of my pants girl. :-(
These look amazing!!!! I love last minute dinners with friends. Impromptu always makes for a great evening!
Sandy….these look AH-mazing! I’m seriously contemplating hopping in may car and driving to Oregon right now. Can you put a batch in the oven? Or wait, I guess *I* could make them. ;) But, it wouldn’t be as much fun.
Hi Sandy
You know I love the salty sweet thing so much I’ll have to try these. My go-to dessert is a berry crisp. I always have frozen berries, top them with a crumble crust of oatmeal, brown sugar and butter and you’re good to go.
Your yard looks and sounds so inviting!
I am going to put this in my file of “to try”…so simple!
One of my go to desserts for the summer is chocolate trifle. I try to keep a batch of brownies in the freezer, cool whip in the freezer and a box of chocolate pudding on hand. It is easy peasy and looks so pretty served in a trifle dish or individual wine glasses…and it takes minutes! Have a very happy mother’s day, Sandy!
YUMMY!!!!!!! All I have left in my stash is light brown sugar- think I could make it work? I’m trying to use everything up because I can’t ship it back. I just made chocolate cupcakes for a Ukrainian friend’s birthday yesterday- he ate 4, so I guess they were a hit! :) My housekeeper (his wife) had me teach her how to make them today since I had to do another batch. It’s a lot of fun to work through recipes with another culture! ha!
I love the idea of getting together with friends after sending the kiddos to prom. I’m quickly approaching that season of life… though it’s hard to believe. Why do kiddos have to grow up so doggone fast? :-)
These brownies look SO amazing! I’m pinning to make soon — we are hosting some friends on a Sunday and I think this would be the perfect end to Sunday Supper.
Happy Mother’s Day Sandy!
