Inviting Someone Over: Creamy Broccoli Soup
When’s the last time you invited someone over for a bowl of soup? This Creamy Broccoli Soup recipe is perfect to make for a lunch date.
Oh, the risks that are involved in opening our homes. So much so that it stops so many from connecting with others. I know I’m not the only one who has struggled with these thoughts:
– Is my home clean enough?
– Will they see my disorganization?
– What if they look in my cupboards?
– Will they notice the dust bunnies on the floor?
– Do I really have to serve food? I hate my cooking!
– Will they judge me if I buy store-bought food?
– Yikes! my dirty windows.
– I haven’t dusted in 2 weeks.
– My bathroom is so outdated.
– Can I settle my mind and learn more about them?
– Will they talk about me to others?
– Will they like me?
– What will they think of me?
Me, me, me. In fact, I wrote about this delicate topic, here.
Don’t worry about others.
I think about my own securities, and how I’ve had to get over them, and I clearly see why inviting others into our homes is so risky.
We’re so worried about ourselves, and what others think, that it absolutely ruins us.
The majority of the time, people aren’t even thinking about us, but are actually thinking of themselves. Seriously!
Learn to say “yes!”
Moments of joy, encouragement, inspiration, authenticity, even tears, and baring our souls are taken from us when we say, “no.” So we need to say, “yes!”
Soup creates community.
My friend came for lunch. I reached for one of my favorite soup recipes.
I remembered reading somewhere that “soup creates community,” so these words helped give me courage, that by serving something homemade, fresh, hot, cozy, and comforting, that just maybe this would be the conduit to bonding with my new friend.
I made the soup, we sat and chatted for hours, I looked into her eyes, and I found myself really caring.
All eyes off myself, I was reaching out and learning to care, and investing in and building ties with a new friend.
And not worrying about myself or my house.
Soup bonds. I felt it. I believe it.
Do you worry about what others think? Does it affect your ability to reach out to others?

We just had this soup for dinner (minus the avocado since we were out) and it turned out lovely. My husband was thrilled, as he can’t have dairy and most broccoli soups use heavy cream or cheese. So thank you for this. It was surprisingly easy, and healthy!
It’s one of my favorite recipes, and totally agree, it’s NOT heavy! Enjoy!
What a wonderful post, your list hit on many of the reasons why I am a entertainingaphobe. When I have had the “courage” of having people over, no one has ever sad your house is horrible, your taste is horrible, your food is horrible and I’ve had a miserable. I usually feel better about my home for having people over – ah to have the courage to do it on a more regular basis!!
I am as speak forcing myself not to have a lot of the concerns that you listed. I feel that way even when family is over. It is sooooo stupid and limiting. I don’t look or consider those items when I go to someone else’s house. I am very casual and go with the flow. I just appreciate the people, pets, kids, food, plants—whatever.
As to the soup—-great idea to float the avocado.
Can’t even tell you how excited I am to sit here in this cozy space you’ve created and just soak it all in. I feel like you are talking directly to ME. What an encouragement! Thank you Sandy!
I worry more about what others think when I invite someone over who judges herself harshly. I worry she won’t be nearly as kind with me as she is with herself – and these friends don’t handle themselves kindly.
I’ve done the “We must really like you – you get to see how we really live!” line, and explained away all the work we’ve already done on our fixer-upper (it’s obvious how much we have left). None of it necessary, friends are comfortable as long as they have a drink in their hand, a place to sit, and something to talk about. But in those situations it’s hard for me to get my mind off how I fall short. I’m working on it :)
Soup is always perfect for gatherings! I love everything about this!
Sounds delish! What would be good to serve with this soup besides a loaf of crusty bread?
Just Tuesday actually. I made a chicken and rice soup. Rather plain, but I was out of ingredients and without a car. I agree that soup is a great lunch idea. Lentil, split pea and ham, white chicken chili, broccoli cheese soup are my most favorite.
Broccoli soup os one of my favorite cold weather dinners. This looks great!
