Day 1: Summer Entertaining is About the People
Welcome to 30 Days of Summer Entertaining!
As I was heading out of town earlier this week, I had a brilliant idea … why not post every day in June, 30 days of summer entertaining tips and inspiration for my readers?
I know every outdoor living space is different, be it a patio, deck, porch, side yard. But the bottom line is that for outdoor entertaining, no matter what your situation, it’s about bringing comfort to our guests, so that they feel warm and welcome in our homes, and also in our outdoor areas.
Summer is sweeter when you share it with friends. Some posts will be tips, ideas, pictures, and some recipes.
But the FOCUS = always on people.
Entertaining is not about impressing or out-doing one another. Throwing a party should always be about the guests and not about yourself as hostess.
I love how when we sit down for dinner, I often sink back in my chair, and relax. I love the conversation. It’s always good. And when our guests leave at the end of the party, there are definite mixed feelings of not wanting to say good-bye, as well as feelings of loving and appreciating them more because we got to know them in a more intimate way.
Yes, summer entertaining is all about the people.

Oh Sarah – I’m so glad you said that. Flies are my problem too, and ants everywhere in our backyard, despite the efforts of a professional exterminator. I would love to get out our fest table, but I get the creepy crawlies just imagining the meal!
I hope you will address what to do about bugs/flies specifically. I have a lovely deck in Austin Texas, but a horrible problem with flies when we try to eat out there:(

I can’t wait for this series! How exciting! We don’t currently have an area for outdoor entertaining..well, I guess we do, but we don’t have furniture, but I hope to have some soon.
I am really looking forward to this series! We just moved into our new home in April and had our first big gathering this past weekend and have another big one next weekend! I am really looking forward to it.
I used to worry about me, my home, my food, how people perceived it all, and I was miserable!
Now I focus more on them and it is great!
I’m so looking forward to all your tips and ideas. Our Summer calendar is nearly filled with weekend friends & family. Everyone loves coming up the lake, and we love having them but I sure need some new tips and recipes. You are so right, Summer is Sweeter when you’re surrounded by friends!
Whoops! That code should be working fine now – it’s amazing how one little backslash can mess up the whole code :)
Love the idea & I’m looking forward to the series. Love your sentence…But the FOCUS = always on people.
Loving this! It is so easy to lose sight of the fact that it’s about the people. I’m so blessed by your blog’s reminder… it isn’t about the table being perfectly set or the house being perfect, it’s about community.
I couldn’t agree more with your statement that entertaining is about focusing on our guest. Good conversation with good friends–a taste of heaven. Looking forward to the feature and will post it on my blog. Thanks!
Sandy..I can’t get the button to work :( Would love to share with my friends. We started outdoor entertaining season a couple of months ago…it is going strong! Thanks for the inspiration – I am looking forward to what you have coming up!

looking forward to this series! my fiance and i have just found a flat for after we’re married in august – the key criteria was a place large enough to fit a dining table of 8-10 and a garden – we got both! hopefully there will still be some summer left when we return from wedding and honeymoon bliss (!) in late august!!!
