Dripping with Soul and Coconut Grapefruit Brulée

Lately we’ve talked more about bringing Sunday Brunch back into our home, and inviting guests to come to a light, casual meal – early in the day rather than later. Recently we served these easy Coconut Grapefruit Brûlée bowls, and they were a big hit.


Hospitality in our home is usually centered on food. With a very busy life, that seems to be the best situation for connecting with people – around a meal. Even if it’s just a glass of water, or an evening with dessert – without a full meal – we’ve found that cherished time with friends is really just about being together. You can take away our house, our garden, pool or yard. We are still just a family unit that revolves around who we are as individuals, and not around what we have.

I love this quote by Mother Theresa, “Kindness has converted more people than zeal, science, or eloquence.”

“Perfect” is unnatural.

If we could just throw open our doors, and not get swept up into perfection and the unnatural (isn’t “perfect”unnatural?), I think there’d be more hospitality happening around us.

When we invite people in, how do we come across to our guests? And what is the essence of our home?

Coconut Grapefruit Brûlée

Easy brunch food.

As mentioned, I made these easy grapefruit halves by broiling them in the oven for only a few minutes. You think it would have been a dessert that took hours – they were that good.

Great for any brunch, weekday or weekend breakfast, or even a light snack before bedtime, we’re loving grapefruit season right now. (Side note … where to buy coconut sugar? I get mine at Trader Joe’s and use it in lots of recipes – and in espresso!)

And especially loving how this recipe is simple if you’re cooking for a crowd! Or, combining with this Baked Egg Tomato Cups recipe I posted last week. You can make 6 or 36 of these easy egg cups!

Combining it all together, our lives, families, homes, hospitality, all make me realize how much I love to walk into a home that drips with soul.

Coconut Grapefruit Brulee

Yield: 4

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 5 minutes

Total Time: 10 minutes

Buy Coconut Sugar at any health food store or Trader Joe's.


  • 2 grapefruit, halved crosswise
  • 3 Tbsp. butter
  • 6 tbsp. coconut sugar


Cut around the grapefruit sections to loosen the segments; discard any seeds.

Dot each half with butter; spring with coconut sugar.

Broil until speckled brown, 4-6 minutes.
