Replacing Fresh Fruit with Home Canned Fruit
I pulled our last jar of fruit from the pantry this week.
Homemade canned fruit, that is.
I’ve been trying to be disciplined lately and not run to the store for every little thing we run out of. And I’ve been trying to teach my teens the same thing.
No fresh apples or bananas? Head to the pantry, kids!
This week I grabbed our last jar of home canned cherries. It actually made me sad, because I’m not sure that I will can cherries this summer. I love them, but the rest of the family is not crazy about them. I’ve been able to cook with them on occasion, but this time I grabbed the last jar and made myself breakfast.
I love to make a “shake” in the morning with fresh fruit, or whatever fruit I can find.
I’ll be canning peaches, pears, applesauce, lots of jams and relishes this year (yes, I’m dreaming of summer.)
But probably not cherries.
If you are a canner, what is your family’s favorite fruit?

Hi Sandy! I’ve never canned before, but this year, I’m determined to try! For some reason – this intimidates me, but I am determined to try!
We love bottled apricots blended with ice. It makes such a refreshing drink. My family of 8 all like it and it’s rare to have foods that everyone likes.
I love to put up peaches, blackberries and blueberries that we grow each year and use them all winter long! We are moving to South Carolina next month and I’ll have to start all over growing again. I hate to miss it this year, but I am hoping for a local farmers market to give us a hand.
I wish I would plan better and be better about canning. I miss having the fruits of my labor during the winter months. Canned cherries for a smoothie sound wonderful!
Canning is my passion and business! My family loves my apricots canned with honey. I’m planning the summer fruit canning season .
Look s delicious! Also love the practice of not shopping constantly but being creative and flexible with our needs and wants. It makes us stronger. : )
Hi Sandy
Wish I was a canner, but I’m not. I’m good at making homemade pasta sauce and freezing it. And my freezer jam is awesome. But canning is not something I’ve ever really done. Maybe this is the year to try it now that I’m officially “at home” and have more time for those types of things.
Your smoothie looks great – I love to start my day with one too. Hmmmm, got some frozen raspberries in the freezer. That sounds like a good way to start the day.
