Recipe Girl’s Upside-Down Brown Butter-Banana Coffee Cake Recipe and KitchenAid Giveaway

Recipe Girl's Upside Down Banana Cake

Hello friends, I am SO excited about this recipe and giveaway post today! You may have heard about my friend Lori Lange’s new cookbook, full of amazing recipes, entertaining tips, and beautiful photography. It’s called The Recipe Girl Cookbook, and today I’m giving away a copy. But keep on reading …

RecipeGirl Cookbook Cover

I had a hard time picking a recipe from Lori’s book to make for my family, because I wanted to make all of them. But with a breakfast theme in mind, I made this coffee cake I’m sharing today, and it was a HIT. I just love delicious recipes where you have everything on hand, and in my house, I usually have an older banana or two or three lying around, so this recipe was perfect.

It’s called Brown Butter-Banana Coffee Cake and trust me, it’s good enough for company!

Recipe Girl's Upside Down Banana Cake

Any recipe made in an upside-down-fashion is usually THE BEST. :) Because it usually means there’s brown sugar and butter involved. And in this recipe … bananas! It reminded me of a banana foster coffee cake!

Her little snippets about each recipe in the book make it much more personable – I like that:

One Sunday morning, many moons ago, I took my creativity out on this cake recipe. My family was eagerly awaiting something special for a weekend breakfast, and I was bound and determined to make something with brown butter…and bananas…and turn it upside down. This was the resulting recipe and it was a big hit with my two boys. Dare I say that the three of us ate the entire cake in one sitting?

My aunt Lydia’s classic coffee cake is the best ever. Don’t know the secret recipe – don’t want to know – too tempting!

I also love my blueberry buttermilk breakfast cake, although it is not, strictly speaking, “coffee cake.”

Any coffee cake is a good coffee cake, but I think my favorite will always be Hobee’s Blueberry Coffeecake. It’s got more lift than any other coffee cake I’ve ever seen. And when paired with their house tea (closest to Seattle or San Francisco’s Market Spice tea) that they serve by the freshly-brewed pot full, it tastes like some of my best memories of SLO and Santa Cruz and people that mean the most to me.

So I wouldn’t call it a traditional coffee cake, but it’s my go-to for a little sweet something in the morning or for a typical (non-chocolate) dessert – Fort Davis Apple Cake featured in Cooking Light years ago. I think it was the first cake I made that used olive oil instead of butter.
