It’s going to be about reclaiming your kitchen, share with your neighbors, invest in your family, and even invite dinner party guests over for a quick meal. Cooking at home has sharply declined over time. Over the years, as our schedules have become busier, we’ve begun to spend less time in the kitchen as a family. That makes me very sad, because I think back to all the years of cooking together and around our family table–the rich conversation, laughter, tears. The table is where so much of who we are today happened.
If I had to do it all over again, I’d do it the same. I wouldn’t want to miss any of it.
More important than the food.
Last child to leave the nest.
As our last child is getting ready to graduate, we have to be intentional with eating together, even though it’s only the three of us. We have to finish strong, keep the family table together, and set the standard high for our kids, so they will continue this on with their families.
5 tips to listen and engage around the table:
1. Be there. We can’t always fix another’s hurts, but we can be there for them, listening and showing love.2. Listen to them. We don’t always need to advise, but we can listen. Sometimes our family just wants a listening ear, wanting to talk things out.3. Give advice. It’s easy to jump in and give advice, but sometimes it’s best to sit back and wait to be asked to share some wisdom. So give it out at the right time.4. Be empathetic. Sometimes our own pains and failures will help others, so be willing to think about your own experiences and how they might help.5. More than words. Sometimes it’s a hug or a smile, or even sharing a tear with a guest, that means the world to our family and friends.

Buying and preparing fresh food can make even the simplest meal absolutely delicious.o Cook together. Set aside “screens-off” time, and enjoy one another while helping out in the kitchen.

If I don’t have guyere cheese, what do you suggest? I have goat, parm, asiago, manchego and the chedders etc.?
Thanks!
Any of those will work, Jennifer, except NO goat cheese :)
This sounds delicious! I love home-cooked meals, and I love being able to give that to others. I didn’t grow up in a home where cooking together and eating together was important (except for during the holidays), but I want to start this tradition in my own family. Your blog is a great resource to help me get started!
You said one way to reclaim your kitchen would be to find a meal planning app or website that “fits your needs.” Do you have any suggestions? I had no idea there were resources out there like that!
Appreciate your help and your words of wisdom. :)

Great post – meal planning and cooking at home is so important. I firmly believe what Michael Pollan says about eating whatever you want so long as you make it yourself – if you’re making poptarts from scratch you’re not going to be eating them every morning. You’ll eat healthier even if you don’t purposely focus on health foods (of course planning healthy, nutrient dense meals is better yet).
Anyway, I’d love for you to check out our free meal planning tool. It’s only web based at the moment and sadly not mobile friendly, but we are overhauling our apps to get it included in them too. https://spoonacular.com/meal-planner
Our oldest moved away to get his phd a couple of years ago. It sure makes you rethink everything, including meal time. Our daughter is still at home, but joining the army reserves, so we know our time is limited with her. Cooking together and eating together takes high priority in our house now. No more taking any moments for granted. When my son visits we all cook together like crazy. He calls me a few times a week to ask cooking questions, and I love every minute of those phone calls. He’s thinking of starting a food blog. Would be fun to see him join the biz.
I love this dip. I don’t make dip enough. However we love salmon. My dad was a big fisherman, we used to go fishing all the time. His favourite fish was salmon so we grew up eating a ton of it.
Kim, our daughter is still home, too! I feel what you are saying here, and that time is KEY and such a gift! Thank you for sharing!
I spend so much time in the kitchen for work that I forget to have Jordan in there with me cooking and learning. I want to get back to that!
Now, you know me and Salmon. But with cheesy dip? I’d try it for sure! :)
I love that, Dorothy … cooking and learning. I do feel we did a good job in teaching our kids, and I love the stories where our son cooks for his friends (brunch) up at college :)
I can practically taste these already Sandy! Love your post, we love eating together as a family!!! Love your great example!
Jenny, you are always so inspiring with your family table, too! I know how you priortizie it with your boys!
What a great appetizer! I agree there has been a big decline in home cooking and its really sad.
Thanks, Peabody! Let’s inspire and help get our friends back into cooking! You’re blog is awesome for this!
Eating together really is so important – it’s a time to share stories, work out problem, laugh. You are always so great at creating those moments, Sandy. And this cheesy dip is something I’d love to serve my family for a meal together.
Thanks, Dara. I know how much you love and adore your family, and take “healthy cooking” seriously!
Beautiful kitchen! I really enjoy your site and how you encourage others to cook and entertain, and most importantly, be a blessing to others!
Thank you, Beth! :)
Oh how I love this dip – and your beautiful kitchen! I’m always looking for new dips to serve, this would be a hit here.
