The Sweetness of Babies Around the Dinner Table
Babies are the sweetness of life. My friend sent me this photo of me and this precious one, and I just couldn’t help but write out my thoughts about babies. What do they have to do with hospitality? A lot!
Last weekend we sat around our friend’s dinner table and drank coffee, tea, and visited.
Coffee, tea, and a visit.
Seriously, when is the last time you went to someone’s house, in the middle of the day, and caught up on life?
It was a weekend, we passed the new baby in the household around the table, and when my turn came, I couldn’t help but soak in the fragrance of this little plump one.
Babies smell so good. It’s hard to ignore their ultimate sweetness, tenderness, their tiny fingers and toes. A simple thought and prayer about the hope that lies ahead for their little life.
And then the baby cries, soft at first, and then louder and louder as if we’re not paying attention–cries that come to a crescendo–and then soften when back in Mama’s sweet arms.
The truth is, I love babies.
I always have, always will.
Babies are the sweetness of life. No need for sugar in the tea or coffee, or muffins, cinnamon rolls, or scones.
They remind me that life is precious, of hope and warmth wrapped and swaddled, snuggled and sweet.
Hospitality, for me, is much better when a baby is around.
Because they reach out, without even know it, and touch the world around them with love.
When’s the last time you visited friends in the middle of the day?
When’s the last time you passed a baby around the table?

Lincoln & London, super cute for twins!
Two of my dear friends have sweet little gals under 6 months, so I love to help care for them & kiss that sweet soft hair! When we catch up with dinner or lunch at my home, I make sure there are little toys out for the babies & loving hands to hold or change a little one in need. Just had baby London at my homw the other day & she was well loved by many! Hope your day is lovely~
I love that name, Frieda. Baby London! Our friends just had a baby and named him Lincoln. Precious!
Oh Sandy…I just love this post.
The baby in the picture is just precious. So happy, so sweet.
One of the blessings I have experienced during my years of homeschooling – especially when my son was younger – is that we mom’s would try to plan a “craft afternoon” once a week. It was usually a Friday afternoon. We would set the kids up with some sort of craft activity and while they were being creative, we mom’s would enjoy coffee and some little treats to eat. And of course there were always a few babies to pass around. It was such a joy!
And you are so right about the hospitality side of things. Moms with infants can sometimes feel a bit self-conscious that they are imposing, especially when the baby cries or they need to change a diaper or breastfeed. As a hostess, when you reach out to these moms making them feel at home and holding the baby while they can rest and take a few sips of their coffee or munch on a snack, it always gives them a nice respite until it’s time to send the little sweetie back to mom’s loving arms.
And in addition to those sweet little ones, I also love entertaining pregnant moms….letting them sink into a comfy chair and put their feet up! And my outreach of hospitality to them is actually more for me than they realize. You see…every time I’m with a pregnant woman it reminds me that God still loves us! :-)
Thanks so much for all the wonderful posts you write! I just love them all!!
Love,
Mary
PS…Ben took his test for high school last Saturday. He thinks he did well. Yipee! I hope to become a little bit more of a regular commenter here come this fall. :-)
Mary, YAY for Ben! and I agree about the pregnant mommies, too. :)
Ahh so adorable. Babies are precious and these photos are great!
I love babies too! Although I’ve not had a baby to pass around lately, I get to sit at little tables with my class of Pre-K 3 kids each day. They are a joy!
What a sweetie! There really is something about babies (and puppies), isn’t there? I love to visit with friends in the middle of the day. Sadly, I haven’t had a baby to pass around, though!
Babies truly smell amazing – even as my little guy is losing his baby smell I still can’t help but just sniff in the scent all day long!
We did this all of the time overseas- it’s just the custom. I’ve had a few ladies over in the morning for tea and a visit since we’ve moved, and it’s always fun to just catch up without a big meal!
