My favorite parts of throwing a Fourth of July party are decorating, inviting the people, and then making one awesome dish to serve our guests. Of course there are always other dishes that guests contribute, that help make the perfect party menu!

You don’t have to do it all!

Delegation is key to creating a simple party, so the host doesn’t have to do it all.

One decorating element, such as a red and white striped tablecloth, can be the foundation of a festive table – like this one.

I remind myself of this when I try to do too much, or try to do it all, to take a deep breath, make lists, ask for help, and then remember once everyone shows up at the party to let go of unrealistic expectations and HAVE FUN!

7 Tips to planning a Fourth of July Party:

1. Decide how you want to serve your guests. Sit-down dinner, buffet style, or fill your plate at the grill? We chose BUFFET style for our Fourth of July party!

2. Think about the seating. Folding chairs, blankets, poolside dining with legs dipping into the water! The Fourth is all about staying COOL and having FUN!

3. Plan out the menu. Make a list and start with the MAIN DISH, and then build around that entree. What will be your signature dish?

4. Delegate. Jot your guests’ names down by a food item or entree’ that you’d like them to bring. Don’t forget the DRINKS and the DESSERT!

5. Start with a fun tablecloth. Then build on that with red, white, and blue accents. CLOTH NAPKINS are a classy touch.

6. Add a live centerpiece. Add a giant fern plant, and a banner that adds to the “4th” flair.

7. Pull it all together. Keep a healthy attitude that believes a Fourth of July party is relaxing, fun, casual, and does not have to be perfect.

Mini Sliders with Caramelized Shallots

Yield: 12-16

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cook Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Recipe from Coca-Cola Refreshing Recipes cookbook.

  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 Tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 Tbsp. steak sauce
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  • 1 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 8 large shallots, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup Coca-Cola
  • 12 buns, or mini rolls, lightly toasted
  • Cheese of choice (optional)

  1. Mix ground beef with onion powder, steak sauce, salt and black pepper.
  2. Form into 12 small, even patties. Set aside.
  3. Heat butter and oil together in medium skillet over medium heat. When butter is melted, stir in shallots.
  4. Cook until just beginning to caramelize, then add Coca-Cola.
  5. Increase heat to medium-high and cook liquid about 4-minutes, until liquid has almost evaporated.
  6. Return to low heat and continue cooking until fully caramelized (watch the shallots carefully so they do not burn).
  7. While shallots are cooking, cook burgers in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, approximately 3-minutes on each side. Top each patty with a slice of cheese, if using cheese.
  8. Fill each bun with a burger and a heaping pile of shallots. Serve with lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles, etc.

  1. The food is always front and center as well as a special cocktail and special treats for the kids. Fun and casual is my motto.

  2. The food is always important but celebrating with friends and family is the best! We always begin with a prayer and then have a wonderful time. Everyone always bring a dish to add to the feast!

  3. Food has always been an intregal part of our family celebrations, everyone brings a dish they are “famous” for and the people who just don’t cook are allowed to bring in a ringer and then we all have fun trying to guess who brang what and who used their ringer in the best way!

  4. Shareable moments are celebrated around a dinner table first and then hanging out together afterward in the den or in lawn chairs!

  5. YUM…looks so good…I have got to make sliders sometime….I always think about it, but never do I love when people gather around the kitchen island or counter and just visit while food is being prepped or once everyone’s plates are filled, no rush to head to a table, but to stand around or sit in various places and just “be” together.

  6. Its all about the food and laughter with us. Good food lawn games and stories.

  7. We have a family and friends cookout/bbq and play games and have a pool and games for the kids.

  8. I am always so inspired to cook healthier meals for my family after reading your blog Sandy! Thanks for many years of inspiration, encouragement and taking us all along on your trips!❤️

  9. I love celebrating the Fourth of July, the food is forefront
with games of croquet and of coarse eating, which is always
    a buffet.

  10. LOVE spending as much time as I can with my grandkids!

  11. Connecting over food! In the summer, it’ll be a BBQ in backyard, with lots of time to relax and catch up with friends!

  12. Food, friends and fun!

  13. Family, Friends and good food.

  14. My husband and I love to plan the menu for a get-together with family and friends! He loves to try new dishes, and it’s fun to see our guests try food they probably never would have otherwise :)

  15. We love to spend time together enjoying great food & just spending quality time together chatting & catching up!

  16. Some fun food, festive drinks, and keeping it casual always work for us. Life’s too short to have stressful parties. I love your party set-up, and I had no idea you could get personalized Cokes. I will have to click over and see how to do it!

  17. Love to have a BBQ and enjoy celebrating outside with family and friends. I also like casual hospitality I think it helps people relax and enjoy themselves more!!!

  18. You always know how to throw a party – and I’m loving all your Cokes with your names!!

  19. Lots of good food!

  20. Holidays are always special because we share them with our family. I love your ideas and it makes it so much easier to delegate the food. This year we will keep it simple with grilled chicken sandwiches and homemade ice-cream!

  21. I love shareable moments/events! Food and drink are most important, after out family and friends. This year, we are celebrating the 4th at our cousin’s house – complete with a pool and lots of food/drinks.

  22. This party came out SO CUTE!! I love the Cokes!! But the sliders take the cake :)

  24. We put the lawn chairs our and laugh!

  25. Good food and good company!

  26. We celebrate by having picnics, Holidays, and beach vacation gatherings with family, friends, great food and Coke.
