KitchenAid GIVEAWAY via USA Today Your Life Magazine

There’s a new publication that hit the stands today by USA Today, designed specifically for women.

It’s called Your Life: Guide to Women’s Health.

Christine Neff, from USA Today, wrote an excellent article in this fabulous magazine called, “Holiday Entertaining Made Easy!”

I’m honored that she included RE as part of the interview on each beautiful page of this feature.

Take a peek at these fabulous pages!

There are fantastic recipes, tips on bringing the outdoors in, simplifying during the holidays, staying sane and “putting perfections aside,” and most importantly, realizing the benefits of entertaining.

There are so many benefits to entertaining, the most obvious in my opinion being forging beautiful relationships!

Your Life is also full of good eats, tips, advice, and plenty of reminders that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Which brings us to our GIVEAWAY here today!

Do you own a stand mixer by KitchenAid? I think I’ve owned a couple in my 30 years of entertaining. I just wear them out, they’re used so much for baking, cooking, and canning. I tend to think of my KA as a friend, who I rely heavily upon. :)

Today in celebration of RE featured in USA Today, KitchenAid is giving away a 7-quart Stand Mixer. This product is brand new, so the winner will be one of the first to own it.

Here are the details (winner gets to choose between silver, black, or red):

KitchenAid’s Best Performing Stand Mixer
• Our Most Powerful, Quietest Available – 1.3HP high efficiency DC motor is designed to run longer and delivers optimum torque with less at build-up. Easily handles recipes requiring longer mixing, kneading and whipping times. The all-metal, precise gear design produces a smooth, quiet sound.
• Our Longest Lasting – Designed for long life of high performance; backed by 2 year hassle-free replacement warranty.
• Our Most Efficient – Advanced feedback control communicates in micro seconds to the motor to ensure optimal power is delivered to the bowl.

Professional-Style Attachment Power Hub
Fits all current KitchenAid® attachments and future larger capacity commercial-style attachments

Largest Capacity Residential Bowl-Lift Available 7-Quart (6.6 L)
• Handles 8 ½ lbs of mashed potatoes, 8 ½ loaves of bread, 14 dozen cookies.

Dishwasher Safe Accessories
Maximize bowl coverage with the stainless steel 11-wire Elliptical Whip, coated metal Flat Beater and Power Knead™ Dough Hook. Handles small and large jobs equally well.

Cooking for the Cure, presented by KitchenAid, reminds us that cooking with a purpose (and supporting the Cure) helps to bring an end to breast cancer in our lifetime.

Oh, how do I believe in this. My mom had breast cancer, and then ovarian cancer took her life. So cancer is fresh in our family and a reminder that we need to do all we can to help.

–CONTEST IS OVER, COMMENTS ARE NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU!–

I do both. Last year I hosted a cookie exchange with the military wives and everyone, of course, brought cookies to share. For larger dinner parties, I do ask others to bring a dish to help out and for smaller parties, I will make the meal myself. Sometimes it’s easier for me to make everything because a family member needs gluten free foods and that is intimidating to others when faced with making a dish that way!

It really depends on the size of the group. When it’s just a few people I generally do it myself, but for a larger group it is definitely easier to do a few main things and have others fill in where needed. Plus, when others bring a dish it’s a great way to try new items I may not have otherwise.

Sometimes I like to make everything myself. I especially enjoy the challenges of making multiple dishes and getting everything to be finished and ready all at the same time. Depends on if I’m comfortable with the guests I’m having over if I potluck style or not. Usually if it’s a friend, AND they offer, then we’ll do potluck. If no one mentions bringing something then I just go ahead and do it all.

We host Thanksgiving and my husband and I share the cooking, which, in our very small kitchen, is no easy feat (we’re both kitchen control freaks!) We usually as both sets of grandparents to bring dessert. My teens insists on baking the pumpkin pies (which is a good thing!)

For holiday gatherings as a semi large gathering of 25+ we do a potluck. We started this several years ago as a good way to keep the work level small for every family and allow more time to enjoy our time together. Everyone brings a main dish, one side dish and a dessert. It eliminates any financial burden from being on any family, since it is the same amount of food they would make for their own family. Single family members or couples can choose to bring a single dish or as much as they choose. It allows for each ‘cook’ to have their food praised, which is always fun to see who can create an amazing dish we all rave about for the next 12 months. As a result we have some of the same traditional dishes that everyone looks forward to, with a blend of new and interesting dishes to keep the meal from being too boring.

If I had more money I would totally make everything myself – because I love doing it! But alas, as a 20-something with many friends in similar situations we’re very much the kind to bring something to a party and love it. I host monthly appetizer & movie nights where everyone brings anything they want (as easy or as difficult as they want!) and we put it all on a table and dig in. And then watch a classic movie like Roman Holiday. It’s fantastic!

We usually do a potluck situation, but I still cook enough myself to feed everyone if I am really honest. It is just less intimidating to ask everyone to bring a side dish or dessert, because then if something doesn’t turn out how I wanted it to, I know there is still plenty of delicious stuff to be had. We usually invite some foreign exchange students to spend the holiday with us so they can see how a Christian family celebrates, and so they are not alone or feeling excluded on a holiday. They can also get credit for the cultural experience of it. We often pack up some of the leftovers to give to single military personnel and college students as well.

It really depends on our mood. We’ve been known to do it all, including beverages, too, or if it is a more casual affair, have everybody bring a favorite dish and beverage to share. My 3 dogs, who certainly don’t bring food to the affair, have no problems participating, though. They expect their fair share of goodies slipped to them covertly under the table, or overtly in response to some cute trick. While our favorite time of night might be hanging out with friends, theirs is cleanup time!

With having big extended families on both sides, usually the hostess supplies the main dish, for us usually some type of meat like the ham or the turkey, and then all the other family members bring side dishes. My favorite side dish, if you can call it that, comes from my dad’s side. His sister makes the best filled cupcakes thanks to her Kitchen Aid mixer. I recently finished college, got engaged and in the process of purchasing a house. A KitchenAid mixer would look great on my new countertop since the only gift I’m asking for at my shower is for all of my aunts to create a recipe book of their favorites for me. I enjoy cooking and a KitchenAid mixer would definitely come in handy!

I tend to make everything myself. Only because we live several hours from family, so when they come for a visit, it’s difficult for them to bring something. Besides, I prefer to be in my kitchen and baking and cooking is my way of showing love.

PS I was a fan of Kitchen Aid on FB and they brought me here. I’ve also “liked” USA Today & Reluctant Entertainer. Which the name Reluctant Entertainer sounds like me. I don’t have the natural gift of hospitality, but I open up my home because it’s something that just isn’t done much these days & I want to cultivate close relationships.

Next on my list is to get the noodle attachments, so I dont have to continue making them with out my kitchen aides help :)

When you host holiday parties, do you make everything yourself or do more of a potluck affair where everyone brings something to share?

I tend to do both! I love to cook for people. I feel like cooking is a way to share a part of you with people. Food tells a story about you and I love when people bring over a dish and get so excited about telling me how they made it. I work as a therapist and I think cooking/baking is my personal therapy. In my perfect world my office would be a Kitchen (equipped with multiple KitchenAid mixers!) where I can cook/bake with individuals, groups and family while processing their presenting issues around loss, grief, depression, anxiety, separation, etc. Cooking has a great way of allowing me to focus on the task at hand and enabling me to be as creative as my imagination allows me to be! I love taking a recipe and adding my own twists to it by adding different spices/ingredients to make the recipe my own. When I have people over I love the conversations that happen when they talk about what they made and how they made it their own. It is very interesting to hear friends talk about how they would change a recipe that we are talking about to fit their taste.

My Kitchen Aid mixer is the single most important piece of counter-top equipment in my kitchen.

Community members bring their favorite recipes and specialty ingredients. We bake and decorate almost 1000 cookies, which we then share and make plates for the local Border Patrol and first responders.

At the end of the day we are exhausted, full of sugar, and very happy. It is a great way to share.

When I’m entertaining, I usually do everything from scratch, from the drink, appetizer all the way to the dessert. I always make a menu and each time I complete a dish, I put a check mark besides it.

I had a Kitchen Aid mixer and it didn’t even last 12 usage. I would love to get a new one since I’m constantly baking and entertaining but after spending so much I’m hesitant to get a new one. If I win this baby, it would be a dream come true….I’ll be so happy so are my guests, especially my hubby.

Since My Mom has Passed away when I was 21, I have been keeping this tradition alive for the last 12 years. I use some of everyones great recipes, to keep the memories alive. Using my Mixer it makes things Quicker, but I have to do it in 2 different batches, because My mixer just isn’t big enough. Typically, I’d do the “core” dishes, with others bringing the “extras” just in case…with a truly potluck meal, it’s not entirely predictable that everything from appetizer to dessert is actually going to arrive. That way, guests can bring whatever their “specialty” is, and we just work it into the rest of the meal–so what if we have 7 desserts and 3 salads with the meal if they are all excellent choices? (Besides, it’s a way to avoid eating Aunt Ethel’s dreadful bean salad without hurting her feelings, right?)

I was raised attached to my mothers hip in the kitchen. I had my own stool to help her cook 3 meals a day, entertaining guests, and those wonderful holiday cookies. I still love to cook to this day.

I have really bad arthritis (and I’m only 34!), so it’s a little more difficult to cook everything I’d like to cook these days. I’ve never owned one of these gadgets.. I know I would cook so much more if I had one since it would be much easier on my hands.
