How to Stencil a Cake and Drum Up Nostalgia
Earlier this week I shared this yummy Dark Chocolate Flourless Cake recipe, but I didn’t tell you how I decorated the cake!
I love this quote that I recently read:
“Never let the odds keep you from pursuing what you know in your heart you were meant to do.”
My Mother taught my sisters and me about hospitality from day one. She lived and breathed it.
We were raised to know in our hearts what we were meant to do.
At Christmas I do get a bit nostalgic, I must say, because we tend to think of our family–past and present–at Christmas.
I came across this Wilton stencil of a tree that my Mother gave me years ago (years ago!) It probably cost her 25 cents to buy it. For 20 years of my marriage I’ve used it off and on during the holidays.
It’s such an elegant yet simple way to decorate a cake.
And it’s what I used to decorate my Dark Chocolate Flourless Cake with.
Do you have anything, such as Christmas cookie cutters or stencils, that’s been passed down from your Mother or Grandmother?
We’d love to hear your story! :)

If you want to drum up nostalgia, it’s not too late to take a family member’s signature and stencil it onto a plate. You can read about it, HERE.

SO cute and, so easy! :) Love it!
I do. I have the wooden nut bowl my Grandmother had on her coffee table every Christmas. Even have the original nut cracker that went with it. Every year when I unpack it, all those magical memories of Christmas mornings at my grandparents home come floating back to me. Including their scrawny but sparkly Christmas trees!
I cannot bake, but I’m making this cake!
I have that same stencil and an Easter bunny one too! I have a big box of Wilton holiday pans that we trot out once in a while for different holidays or birthdays. Fun for the grandkids to decorate as they wish. I have kept my mom’s set of rosette irons and oh how I miss making them with her for the holidays. I also have her teapot that she used when I was a little girl. When I didn’t feel well, she would always play tea party with me and make hot chocolate or “fairy tea” before nap time to soothe me.
How pretty! I have my Grandma’s rolling pin and doughnut cutters! I just love using the heirlooms during Christmas! They bring back so many wonderful memories!
We use my great grandmother’s cookie sheets, another great grandmother’s cookie jar, and my grandmother’s cookie press. (plus of course, recipes)
Now this is darned cute!
Sandy, I LOVED the feature on you in the Foodie Crush magazine! xoxox.
The only thing I have from my mother is the old plastic Santa in his gift packed sleigh with 8 reindeer that used to sit on the television every Christmas. I don’t know how I got it, but it comes out every year and now I’ve started a small collection of the same sort of thing. Funny, the original one only has 1 gift and 2 reindeer left – guess we kids got at it over the years. But every year I love it more.
