Making a Dagwood Sandwich with Zucchini Relish
As a little girl, I couldn’t wait for the Sunday paper. We didn’t have a television growing up, so the Sunday comics were a big hit with us girls. And the Blondie comic was one of my favorites. Did you read Blondie??
Most people know what a Dagwood sandwich is, but here’s what I found on Wikipedia.
Basically it’s meat, cheese, and condiments.
So earlier this week for lunch, I made my own Dagwood, although not quite so tall. How in the world would you ever get a sandwich that big into your mouth? :)
I took veggies, Swiss cheese, and a couple pieces of bacon. (Instagram lunch shot.) :)
Put it all together with beloved avocado slices. Which I think really make a sandwich.
And added Zucchini Relish on top.
Later this summer when zucchini is coming out of our ears, I’ll be canning my delicious Zucchini Relish. This year we received a jar from our friends, who gave it for Christmas gifts (using my recipe – yum!)
I haven’t made it in a couple of years and but honestly, it takes any ordinary sandwich to the next level.
It’s the bomb. I can’t wait to share the recipe with you in a few months! Stay tuned ….
In the meantime, I asked on RE Facebook what 3 top ingredients are a MUST for a tasty sandwich.
Here are a few replies:
When I read through the entire thread of comments, I do believe avocado + bacon were the most popular ingredients.
What’s your favorite TOP 3 ingredients for a Dagwood sandwich?

Oh I like the sound of that zucchini relish – alot! I’d love that on a sandwich. Avocado is always a favorite :)
Blondie was always my favorite too. We still get the paper daily (I’m a newspaper girl) & we always pull out the comics for Gina :)
I’m on the avocado and bacon bandwagon all the way, but homemade pickles are a must have!
Love avocado and maybe something spicy…those hot cherry peppers… grainy mustard…now I’m hungry.
I like avocado and all the other things mentioned in one combo or another. The most important thing to me though is starting with a really good bread. Will be watching for the relish recipe.
