Cottage Cheese Dip
This Cottage Cheese Dip is light and dreamy for game day or any “dipping” occasion, with caramelized onions, cottage cheese, and fresh thyme.
Game day dips can be very calorie dense, but not nutritionally dense. Because of this, we are sharing today our Cottage Cheese Dip with caramelized onions. This dip has 36 grams of protein from the cottage cheese, a great alternative to sour cream, mayo, or cream cheese. For low-cal recipes, you may also want to try our Greek Yogurt Ranch Dip (only 2 ingredients).
Cottage Cheese Dip
Cottage cheese blends into a creamy, thick texture that is flavored by sweet, savory, bright caramelized onions and fresh thyme. If you’ve ever tasted Trader Joe’s Vegan Carmelized Onion Dip, and love it like we do, then you’ll want to make this recipe. It tastes exactly like it, except this is fresh and homemade.
Serve it on game day, or for potlucks or gatherings! There’s always room at the table for our favorite Cottage Cheese Dip!
Why we love Cottage Cheese Dip
- It’s a nice creamy dip, but is much healthier than most store-bought dips, thanks to the cottage cheese.
- All it takes are 7 ingredients and no special equipment. Just stir and serve!
- Enjoy it for any party or after-school snack.
Easy ingredients in Cottage Cheese Dip with caramelized onions
This Cottage Cheese Dip takes some time (to caramlize the onions), but it’s worth it! You can also make this in a blender if you like (see below), though the food processor is the best tool for the job. Here are the only ingredients you’ll need:
- Butter
- Yellow onion
- White wine
- Salt & pepper
- Fresh thyme
- Cottage cheese: full fat
- Olive oil
- Honey
How to make a cottage cheese dip
- In large pot over medium-high heat, add the butter, onions, thyme sprigs, and a generous pinch of kosher salt. Cook until the butter melts into the onions and steam begins to rise. Reduce heat to low and stir.
- Once you remove the lid, cook more and stir.
- During the last 20 minutes or so, add the white wine and allow it to cook off. Continue cooking until the onions have reached your desired level of caramelization—this could mean cooking for 1 hour total for a very dark, jammy final product. [Depends on how caramelized you want the onions.]
- In a mini food processor, add the cottage cheese, olive oil, pepper, honey, and 3/4 of the onions. Puree until smooth.
- Taste for additional salt and honey and puree once more. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the remaining onions.
What to dip
Anything that you’d typically dip in ranch dip is delicious dipped in this dip! It’s tasty, with a variety of vegetables, crackers, and chips. Here are our favorites for this dip:
- Carrot sticks and celery
- Bell peppers
- Broccoli
- Snap peas
- Jicama sticks
- Pita bread or pita crisps
- Crackers of any kind, including nut-based or gluten-free
- Crostini
- Bread
- Chips
Tips and substitutions:
- Leftovers? Repurpose it as a salad dressing or sauce by adding more liquid (white wine or water).
- It’s very good served with eggs and breakfast foods or on a chicken sandwich or wraps.
- Swap out the thyme for your favorite herb. Rosemary, parsley, or basil also works. But thyme is our favorite (with the onions).
Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with thyme, and serve chilled with crackers, bread, or veggies.

Cottage Cheese Dip
Ingredients
- 3 Tbsp butter
- 2 large yellow onions, sliced 1/4’’ thick
- ½ c white wine
- Salt to taste
- 3 thyme sprigs, plus fresh thyme leaves to garnish
- 1 ½ c full fat cottage cheese
- 3 Tbsp olive oil
- ¾ tsp black pepper
- 1 Tbsp honey
- Salt to taste
Instructions
- In large pot over medium-high heat, add the butter, onions, thyme sprigs, and a generous pinch of kosher salt. Cook until the butter melts into the onions and steam begins to rise. Reduce heat to low. For faster softening, add 1 Tbsp water, and cover the onions for about 35 minutes with a lid, to build steam and keep the moisture in, stirring every 12-15 minutes. Once you remove the lid, cook for another 25-35 minutes more, stirring a few times. During the last 20 minutes or so, add the white wine and allow it to cook off. Continue cooking until the onions have reached your desired level of caramelization—this could mean cooking for 1 hour total for a very dark, jammy final product.
- In a mini food processor, add the cottage cheese, olive oil, pepper, honey, and 3/4 of the onions. I reserve the remaining whole onions to stir into the dip to add texture, but you can add them all to the processor if you’d like to skip that step. Puree until smooth.
- Taste for additional salt and honey and puree once more. Transfer to a bowl and stir in the remaining onions.
- Transfer to a serving bowl, garnish with thyme, and serve chilled with crackers, bread, or veggies.
