Why I love this recipe
- Anyone can make it. If you can brown ground beef, then you can make this Sloppy Joes Dip recipe.
- It serves about a dozen, but it’s easy to divide in half for a smaller group or to double for a crowd.
- This is a pretty adaptable recipe and you can make some changes based on your own tastes. See my suggestions below.
Gather these ingredients
- Ground beef – You’ll need 2 pounds of extra lean ground beef.
- Green bell pepper – 1 pepper, diced small.
- Red bell pepper – 1 pepper, diced small.
- Onion – A large onion, diced.
- Garlic – Fresh cloves, minced.
- All-purpose flour
- Brown sugar
- Salt and pepper – To taste.
- Red pepper flakes – Optional.
- Beef broth
- Ketchup
- Dijon mustard
- Worcestershire sauce
- Sharp cheddar cheese – Shredded.
- Parsley – Finely chopped.
- Baguettes – Sliced and toasted.
- Frito corn chips – The large dippers.
How to make Sloppy Joe Dip
- Combine the extra lean ground beef, diced bell peppers, diced onion, minced garlic, flour, brown sugar, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a heavy pot or skillet. Add the red pepper flakes if you like a bit of heat.
- Cook the beef mixture over medium-high heat, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Cook until most of the moisture has evaporated, about 15 minutes. The meat should be crumbly and brown.
- Stir in the beef broth, ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix well and simmer over low heat for 45 minutes.
- Turn off the heat and mix in ¾ cup of shredded cheese.
- Preheat your broiler.
- Spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray then transfer the dip to the prepared baking dish.
- Top with the remaining cheese and broil the dish under the broiler for bout 5 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and browned.
- Remove from the oven, sprinkle with chopped parsley, and serve with toasted baguette slices and Frito chips.
Tips & substitutions
- Switch things up! You can use ground pork, chicken, turkey, or even sausage in place of the beef in this recipe.
- Instead of sharp cheddar cheese, try Pepper Jack for a bit of heat, smoked gouda for a smoky flavor, or your favorite easy-melting cheese.
- I love serving this dip with toasted baguette slices and Fritos, but kettle-cooked potato chips, crackers, and halved mini peppers also work well.
- You can prep this dip ahead of time and then just bake it in the oven to warm it up before putting the final touches on it under the broiler.
Serving suggestions
This is such a fun and tasty dip! I love serving it with other finger foods, like Spicy Black Bean Salsa, tasty deviled eggs, and Wedge Salad Bites. It’s also great on its own! Serve it as a snack, for nibbling on when friends stop by, or take it tailgating. It’s perfect for so many occasions!
Storage
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat it in a low oven or microwave.
