Strawberry Dumplings

This is an “ooh” and “ahh” worthy dessert. It ALWAYS impresses people, but I don’t often tell them how easy it is to make or how you can prep it ahead of time and then just pop it in the oven to bake.

This is a great recipe to make when local strawberries are in season, but you can certainly make it any time of the year. Just be sure to use fresh strawberries because frozen ones are too watery, and your dish will be too soggy.

Ready for an epic dessert? This Strawberry Dumplings recipe is it!

How to make the best Strawberry Dumplings

  1. Preheat your oven to 350-F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Set the dish aside.
  2. Separate the crescent dough triangles on a flat surface that’s been dusted lightly with flour.
  3. Rinse, hull and pat the strawberries dry, then slice them. Set 1 cup aside for the sauce.
  4. Spread 1 tablespoon of Nutella on each triangle, then top with a spoonful of sliced strawberries.
  5. Fold the dough up and around, pinching the edges together and seal to make dumplings. Set the dumplings in the prepared baking dish. You should have 16 dumplings.
  6. Add the butter and remaining strawberries to a microwave-safe bowl and microwave until the butter has melted. Alternatively, do this in a saucepan on the stovetop.
  7. Mash the strawberries into the butter with a fork until it is jammy and chunky. Stir in the dark brown sugar, vanilla paste, almond extract, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Pour the mixture over the dumplings in the baking dish.
  8. Drizzle the soda into the baking dish between the rows of dumplings. Don’t pour it over the top.
  9. Bake at 35-F for about 40 minutes or until golden brown. Ensure the dumplings are cooked through and are golden brown.
  10. Serve warm with ice cream. Enjoy!

Tips & substitutions

  • You can prep this dish up to the time of adding the strawberry-brown sugar topping and soda. Prep the dumplings and put them into the fridge, covered in plastic wrap. Then, just top with the strawberry topping, add the soda, and bake!
  • Use fresh strawberries, not frozen, as frozen will be too watery.
  • You can use light brown sugar in place of dark brown sugar.
  • No Nutella? Try this recipe with chocolate sauce or even peanut butter.

  • ¾ cup dark brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla paste
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 ½ teaspoons lemon juice
  • ¾ cup 7 up or Sprite soda or Ginger Ale

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Separate the crescent dough triangles on a flat surface (lightly floured so they won’t stick).
  • Wash, dry, and slice the strawberries. Divide them, setting aside 1 cup for the sauce.
  • On each crescent triangle, spread 1 tablespoon of Nutella, and then place a spoonful of sliced strawberries.
  • Next, wrap dough up and around, pinching to seal the edges, to make a dumpling. Place the dumplings in a prepared baking dish. You should have 16.
  • Add butter and remaining 1 cup of strawberry slices to a bowl and heat until butter has melted. You can do this on the stovetop or microwave.
  • Mash strawberries into the butter, into a jam-like consistency, using a fork. Stir in dark brown sugar, vanilla paste, almond extract, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Pour mixture evenly over the dumplings in the pan.
  • Next, pour the soda over the dumplings, in between the rows. Do not pour over the top.
  • Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown. Make sure the crescent rolls are cooked through and nice and brown.
  • Serve warm, right away, with a small scoop of ice cream.
