Caprese Stuffed Bread
Making a caprese stuffed bread is the best thing, and a great side dish for any Italian meal. Filled with all things caprese–mozzarella cheese, basil, and plenty of tomatoes–this bread is not only beautiful, it’s so cheesy-good. You can also serve this with our Caprese Chicken Casserole. Yum!
Why we love this recipe
- It uses up tomatoes in the fridge (or fresh garden tomatoes)
- It’s so delicious and super easy to make!
- Makes a great party appetizer, or game day snack!
Summertime means you can finally find good tomatoes. These beautiful tomatoes were harvested from our garden a few years ago. I can’t get enough of the vibrant colors, and in the summer we eat tomatoes like crazy, often roasting and freezing them.
I love this pull-apart bread, caprese-style, because all the ingredients are fresh and the recipes comes together in o time. It also pairs well with any caprese salad, flabread, or caprese boards. [These were our tomatoes from our southern Oregon garden back in 2014.]
Gather these ingredients
- Roasted Garlic Parmesan bread: or one large boule
- Fresh mozzarella cheese
- Pesto
- Crushed garlic
- Garlic salt
- Sour cream
- Fresh tomatoes: you can use cherry tomatoes or regular (cut in small pieces)
- Fresh basil
- Balsamic Glaze: buy store-bought or you can make your own (tips below)
How do you make Stuffed Caprese Bread?
- Sliced a round of bread lengthwise and then crosswise with a serrated knife, to about ¼ inch from the bottom of the round.
- Cut mozzarella cheese slices into small pieces and stuff in between the cuts of the bread.
- Mix together the pesto, sour cream, and garlic salt and cook for 30 seconds in the microwave. Stir and cook for another 30 seconds. Take out of the microwave and drizzle (or brush the bread) into each side of the cuts of bread.
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper or foil (to avoid a mess) if you choose to.
- Wrap bread round in foil and bake for 30 minutes, then open foil and bake for another 5 minutes or until cheese is melted more.
- Remove from oven and serve immediately, topped with fresh garden tomatoes and chopped basil.
Tips and Substitutions:
- Want to make your own glaze? Take ½ cup balsamic vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar.
- Make the Glaze: Add the balsamic vinegar and sugar to a small sauce pot over medium high heat. Whisk until sugar is dissolved and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, for 5 minutes, whisking occasionally. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Optional to use cherry tomatoes or large tomatoes (cut into chunks).
- Optional to add fresh basil (or leave it off).
- Use a loaf of bread or a boule.
How do you serve stuffed bread?
Transfer to a plate, drizzle with balsamic vinegar glaze, and serve warm.
Who could resist this fantastic Cheese Bread stuffed with fresh mozzarella cheese, pesto, and topped with fresh garden tomatoes?
We’ve fallen in love with this yummy bread! You can serve it as an appetizer, tailgating recipe, or even munch on it as a main dish!
I have to say it was fun to make, but even more enjoyable eating it. When you pull the bread cubes away from the loaf, there’s garlicky gooey mozzarella cheese strings, with rich pesto, that melt in your mouth.
Just serve it with lots of napkins!
Enjoy!

Could we have a recipe for the garlic parmesan bread? Our nearest Costco is over 100 miles away and I’ve never seen it in our store. We only have one store! ๐ข
We do have this hot herb bread recipe on the blog, here.
This looks delish and I plan to fix it when I visit my daughter and her fiance.
Per chance, have you tried it with feta cheese?
I have not. It wouldn’t be as “cheesy” if you used feta, although the flavor would be great.
Is that balsamic vinegar drizzled on top, Sandy?
I can’t wait to try this, it looks amaaazing!!!
As does your beautiful bounty of tomatoes, sooo envious! ;)
Blessings!
Chris
It’s a balsamic glaze (you can buy at DeLallo or Trader Joes!)
This look amazing and I’m going to make this for my husband. He loves watching football and eating and this looks perfect. We still have tomatoes coming in as well. Can you tell me your recipe and instructions for freezing tomatoes?
Hi, Beth. I just use the roasting method that I’ve posted here, for freezing tomatoes! It’s so yummy!
This looks amazing!!! I haven’t done much to my yard and no garden this year, so I’m enjoying looking at everyone elses. :)
