Baked Potato Recipe in Air Fryer
Air Fryer Baked Potatoes turn out perfectly fluffy on the inside, with a crispy skin, as if they were oven-baked! You can also use my oven Baked Russet Potatoes recipe, but these potatoes cook faster in an air fryer than they do in an oven. Baking a potato in the oven takes about an hour, but in the air fryer, about 45 minutes.
Why we love this recipe:
- No pre-heating the oven. Prepare and start baking immediately.
- It’s less baking time than a standard oven, and Air fryers use less energy than our ovens!
- A great method for summertime because you don’t heat up the house.
- We love them loaded up with our favorite toppings (sour cream, bacon, and chives).
We also love the crispy on the outside texture!
Ingredients for potatoes in the air fryer
- Russet potatoes: the best kind for baked potatoes
- Kosher salt and black cracked pepper (garlic powder is optional)
- Toppings: These are optional, but we love butter, sour cream, crispy, crumbled bacon, and fresh chives.
How long should a potato bake at 400?
About 45 minutes. Baked until fork tender!
How do you bake potatoes in the air fryer?
- Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (180ºC).
- Wash the potatoes and poke each potato with a fork on every side.
- Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket, spray evenly with cooking spray, and season with salt and pepper. If you want a garlic flavor, you can also sprinkle with garlic powder.
- Cook at 400°F for 35-45 minutes, depending on how large they are. Optional to flip over half-way through (to get crispiness all around).
- Remove from the air fryer and allow to cool.
Tips and substitutions:
Did you know, air fryers also use less energy than your oven? Another great reason to bake your potatoes in the air fryer!
- Should you pierce potatoes before air frying? Yes, the holes help any steam release during the cooking process.
- How many potatoes can you cook at a time in the air fryer basket? This depends on the size of the air fryer.
- Can you put aluminum foil in an air fryer basket? Yes! Unlike a microwave, you can use foil in an air fryer. We always put a small sheet of foil down, plus it’s easy clean-up.
- You do NOT want to wrap the potatoes in foil (as you would in the oven), because this causes them to steam (and will be soggy).
- Optional if you don’t want crispy potatoes: Cover the potatoes with a sheet of aluminum foil.
- How do you make potatoes not stick to the air fryer basket and foil? Use a small amount of oil or cooking spray. The oil (fat) promotes browning and can help crisp up the potatoes (and prevent sticking).
- What oil is best to use in an air fryer? Use high smoke point oils such as avocado oil, sunflower oil, and light olive oil. We often use cooking spray.
- Storing the potatoes: Store leftover baked potatoes in an airtight container for up to 5 days in the refrigerator. They are delicious for breakfast the next morning, in eggs!
- Reheat the potatoes: If you are reheating them to eat as a “baked potato” then cut in half and air fry them again for about 10 minutes at 300 degrees, or until heated through. You can still add the usual toppings. Delish!
How to serve baked potatoes:
When ready to serve, cut each potato with a knife lengthwise. Squeeze open and push together to mush the potatoes (on top).
Top with butter, sour cream, crispy bacon, chives, and more fresh cracked pepper.
Need more topping ideas? Try red onion, salsa, flavored butters, Boursin cheese, favorite cheese (goat, feta, Gruyere, etc.). Add more veggies like chopped bell peppers, air fried broccoli, and make a cheese sauce.
Baked potatoes are also delicious served with chili, on an Epic Chili Charcuterie!
Enjoy!
