What is this Boursin cheese appetizer?
This Boursin spread is a stunning, no-bake appetizer featuring a creamy base of garlic and herb cheese smeared onto a platter of choice. The real magic lies in the simplicity of assembling this holiday appetizer – just drizzle it with hot honey, and sprinkle it with chopped roasted hazelnuts (or even pistachios) and pretty pomegranate seeds.

Every mouthful is loaded with irresistible flavor and texture for effortless elegance – coming together in mere minutes. Enjoy this party spread with your favorite crackers, freshly sliced veggies, sliced baguette, and other holiday appetizers.

Ingredients needed to make Boursin spread with hot honey
- Boursin cheese: I’ve used the garlic herb flavor which pairs beautifully with the rest of the ingredients.
- Roasted hazelnuts: A combination of chopped and crushed nuts creates an ideal texture. Roasted nuts add depth of flavor that you won’t get with raw nuts. Almonds, pecans, or pistachios will also work. Salty nuts are delish!
- Hot honey: This is essentially honey infused with chili peppers (or flakes) and apple cider vinegar for a kick of heat and tangy bite. You can easily source this from your local grocery store or make it yourself. NOTE: Hot Honey does not mean it’s hot (tempteratur) but more with a kick!
- Pomegranate seeds: For a beautiful pop of festive color. They also contribute a sweet, tangy, and fruity flavor to this Boursin spread. Dried cranberries could be used instead for a chewy sweetness.
- Crackers: These are my favorite for serving with this cheese spread. Feel free to use your favorite brand – plain, salted, or flavored.

Sandy’s tips and substitutions:
- Storage: I recommend you enjoy this boursin spread fresh. That said, any leftovers could go in the refrigerator for a day but the texture and appearance may not hold as well. Make sure to wrap the plated cheese spread in plastic wrap when storing leftovers as a way to prevent it from absorbing food odors in the fridge.
- Bring to room temperature: The packaged and unwrapped boursin cheese needs to be brought to room temperature so that it is easy to spread in your serving plate and can be scooped out or spread over crackers.
- Choice of container: I love using decorative plates or platters when serving this holiday appetizer for extra flair! It doesn’t have to be huge – even a dinner plate will work.
- Make your own hot honey: If you don’t have store-bought hot honey, it’s easy to make! Gently warm 1/2 cup of regular honey in a microwave or saucepan and stir in 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes or a few slices of fresh chili. Let it steep for 15-20 minutes to infuse the heat. Cool it completely before use.

Variations
- Boursin with pistachios and hot honey: Use roasted salted shelled pistachios instead of hazelnuts for a delicious and easy variation.
- Whipped boursin with cranberry pepper jelly and pecans: Whip the softened boursin cheese with this Cranberry Pepper Dip, spoon it into your favorite serving bowl or dish, and top with a sprinkle of roasted chopped pecans. It’s perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas!
- Boursin onion spread with pecans: Top your softened boursin with sweet caramelized onion jam and pecans.
- Boursin fig spread with pecans: Top the boursin spread with a layer of sweet fig jam and a sprinkle of roasted chopped pecans.
- Garnish with fresh herbs: Add a pop of color and freshness with a final sprinkle of finely chopped fresh herbs. Fresh thyme or rosemary would complement the flavors of this recipe beautifully.
