Cinnamon Fried Tortillas
Fried tortillas can be turned into salted tortilla chips, or sweet cinnamon sugar chips! These sweet treats are also called Buñuelos, a crispy, crunchy fried flour tortilla Mexican dessert.
These sweet tortilla chips are a must-make for your next gathering. Get kids in the kitchen and use cookie cutters to make the tortillas into fun shapes, or cut into triangles.
Why I love this recipe
- It’s a light dessert to serve for Mexican night.
- Delish dipped in Nutella or jam, or enjoyed with just the cinnamon and sugar.
- Easy to doubel the batch, and make ahead for Taco Night.
Gather these ingredients
- Flour tortillas
- Sugar
- Cinnamon
- Allspice + nutmeg
- Kosher salt
- Sunflower, canola oil, or vegetable oil (or enough to fill the bottoms of a small Dutch oven 1”)
- Nutella or jam for dipping (optional)
How do you make Cinnamon Fried Tortillas?
- Cut the tortillas (set out a cutting board) – use cookie cutters or cut into triangles. Use larger triangles to not have to be standing by the oil so long.
- Heat the oil in a large dutch oven, on high. You can test when it’s hot enough by sprinkling a sprinkle of water, to see if it “pops.” When it pops it’s hot enough.
- Set up a plate with paper towels next to the hot oil.
- Prepare the cinnamon and sugar bowl. Wait until the tortillas are WARM (not hot) before adding the cinnamon and sugar.
- Use a heavy bottom skillet that has high walls for safety (no grease fires please)! You’ll also need a thermometer attached to the side to monitor the temperature of the oil.
- Fry 4-6 tortilla pieces at a time for about 30 seconds each side. Using a slotted spoon to flip the tortillas and place onto the paper towels. Remove from oil and let the excess oil drip back into the pan.
- Immediately dredge or sprinkle tortillas with cinnamon-sugar mixture. Transfer to a wire rack until ready to serve with Nutella or another sweet condiment.
Serving
These are so good, and addictive!! I served them with a fruit salsa and they were a great hit.
- Salsa
- Nachos
- Fruit salsa
- Ice cream
- Nutella or jam (for spreading or dipping)
Tips and substitutions:
- When buying tortillas, we use 5-inch flour tortillas.
- Use the thinnest tortillas you can find. Avoid extra thick or “fajita style” tortillas.
- You know when they are done, when they are crispy all the way through and a golden color.
- After frying the tortillas, they should be drained but not dried.
- When you remove from oil, make sure you hold in place for a few seconds to allow the excess oil to drip back into the pan.
- Immediately dredge or sprinkle tortillas while they are hot, into the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- You can make ahead and reheat in the air fryer!
