If you thought your waffle iron was just for waffles, you are going to love this recipe. I use mine to make cookies more than waffles!

Does Trader Joe’s have cookie dough?

Yes, they do, in the refrigerator section, hear the eggs and yogurt. Trader Joe’s chunky chocolate chip cookie dough delivers close-to-homemade flavors. The dough is portioned into pieces, which you break apart and bake at home. One package has sixteen pieces of dough.

Heart-Shaped Waffle Cookies

Ingredients for Heart-Shaped Waffle Cookies

Last year, we bought some ready-made chocolate chip cookie dough, and the idea was to see if we could make waffle cookies using the Dash Mini Heart Waffle Maker.

The secret is to not use too much dough, but just enough to fill in the entire heart-shape. Also, you do not want to overcook them (just as if you were baking in the oven).

How do you make heart-shaped waffle cookies?

We used two dough pieces from the package of ready-made chocolate chip cookie dough.

  1. Preheat the waffle maker.
  2. Center the dough balls and gently push the lid down, until the dough is flattened.
  3. Let it cook for about two minutes, thirty seconds, then unplug the waffle maker. Open the lid and let the cookie sit for a minute.
  4. Gently use a butter knife to loosen around the edges. Close the lid and flip the whole thing over, and the cookie falls into the lid. Carefully remove to a cooling rack.
  5. Allow the cookies to sit on a cooling rack to harden up. The cookies will be very soft, but will firm up as they cool.

Arrange three or more in the center of a board for Valentine’s Day! Add more desserts to fill in the board.

Is this the best way to cook up a big batch of cookies?

No, I think it’s best to cook up just a few cookies for a board (maybe three for the center, to show off the “hearts.”)

The reason is that it takes too much time to do more than a few, although it’s a very cute idea. You could also have someone be the “cookie maker,”and it would take just about twenty minutes or so.

Can I put cookie dough in a waffle maker?

Yes! You can put any premade cookie dough in your waffle maker, including refrigerated dough like chocolate chip, peanut butter, and sugar cookie dough.

What is the best waffle maker for waffle cookies?

You can use any waffle maker, depending on the size. Play around with the size of the small appliance, and the number of premade cookie dough balls you need. The larger the waffle maker, the more cookies you can cook at once. Here are my favorite waffle makers:

  • Heart waffle  maker, perfect for any recipe
  • Cuisinart Griddler + waffle plates, great for washing (and if you already have a Griddler, no need for extra appliances)
  • Dash Mini: This is great for single serve, but will take a long time to make all the waffle cookies.

How long does Trader Joe’s cookie dough last?

You can keep the dough out on the counter for two hours, then make sure you pop it back in the fridge. You can also freeze the store-bought dough for as long as nine to twelve months.

For the mini waffle make, TWO cookie balls make ONE nice, crisp, heart-shaped cookie!
