Ahi Tuna Salad
When Paul and I were on Waikiki Beach, on our layover from Australia to back home, we went to the fish market and ate our dinner at sunset. It was magical (and tasty), so when we got home, we quickly went to the store to recreate the salad we had eaten.
Ahi tun steak, lettuce, mango, cucumber and avocado. Shredded carrots, radish, jicama, peanuts, and sesame oil. Don’t forget the sesame dressing!
Why I love this recipe
- It’s a great “eat the rainbow” salad
- Making seared ahi is very simple – and it’s delicious on a salad.
- We love this for lunch or dinner.
- You can cut smaller pieces and make this salad a “chopped” salad.
Gather these ingredients
This recipe today is light and easy. And you can buy ahi tuna steaks at Costco (if you are a Costco shopper).
- Ahi tuna steak
- Romaine lettuce, chopped
- Mango
- English cucumber
- Avocado
- Shredded carrots
- Radishes
- Jicama: we buy already cut up at Trader Joe’s
- Peanuts, dry roasted and unsalted
- Sesame oil
- Sesame seeds
- Ground pepper
- Salt, to taste
- Toasted sesame dressing
How do you make Ahi Tuna Salad?
- Wash your tuna steak under cold water, then dry it thoroughly with paper towels. Set aside.
- Mix together sesame seeds and pepper. Salt both sides of your steak, then dip into the sesame seeds and pepper—nestle the steak into the seasoning and make sure all sides are covered, including the outside edges.
- Heat the sesame oil in a nonstick pan. When oil is hot, lay the steak in and sear for 2 minutes on each side. Use tongs to sear the edges of the steak, too (but only for about 30 seconds).
- Allow to cool slightly, then, cutting against the grain, slice tuna into 1/2 inch thick strips.
- To assemble the salad, lay down your lettuce and arrange the remaining vegetables and fish on top. Refrigerate and serve cold!
