There’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, and that is I’m not a perfect housekeeper!
My house is often messy and cluttery, especially when I have a lot going on. I can only handle it for so long, and then I get in and clean and declutter. But with unannounced company, my the state of my house has actually hurt my pride.
I think we’ve all struggled with this “perfectionism” issue at different times.
Hospitality scenerios:
When last minute guests have arrived, or we’ve extended a spontaneous invite, sometimes I just don’t feel “ready.”
I’ve grown now over the years, with a different attitude, challenging myself to put people before perfection. This has actually humbled me.
I’ve learned to overlook a few things that weren’t “perfect” and tell myself “it doesn’t matter.” And then move on and enjoy the people in my home.
What have I learned?
Ready or not, invite people in!
Happy Spring, Friends!

I’m not a great housekeeper as gardening is more important, BUT at the same time not comfortable if company comes unexpected (even family) and the house is messy or cluttered.
We have some friends that pop over 2 or 3 times a month. Sometimes they stay for hours, sometimes only a few minutes. Sometimes it starts with just the husband and son, then maybe one of the daughters stops by and then the mom. One time I opened the door and it was their nephew! That has really helped me get used to not having a perfect house. I love these friends like my family. At the same time, I have had parties (usually just family) where I will tell certain neat freaks that they can only use particular restrooms because that was all I had time to clean. Life is too short to not enjoy the people in your life. Sandy, thanks for all of your inspiration and ideas!
Thanks for sharing your story, Clare! I’m sure it’s encouraging to others as well!
Love this, fast and easy, elegant to serve and yummy too
Quick desert for drop in guests
When do you add the mascarpone cheese?
These look so good, Sandy!
I am the WORST about not having people over unless things are perfect…and they NEVER. ARE. Ha!
Yup. I’ve yet to see perfect – ha ha! :)
I agree with Kelly, these are perfection!!
Holy moly! I’m loving that KitchenAid strawberry slicer! And these parfaits look like absolute perfection!
Strawberries and mushrooms – it’s one of my favorite tools in the kitchen! :)
I had to laugh. I still remember the first time I bought a desert for a dinner party. Changed everything for me! This is a great idea. I have a busy week that ends with preparing dinner for 14. Seems just about right for the gang!
Linda, this recipe is a cinch! Great for spring, Easter, summer, July 4th … :) Any kind of fruit, too!
What yummy desserts and quick! It seems the times of not being prepared aren’t as common right now because our lives are in a busy season so we really can’t do too much spontaneous planning, though on those occasions (I think back a month or so ago when my hubby invited a few friends over after he worked out for soup)…I always make plenty of it so it was no worries..I just pulled out a few other things on hand and didn’t worry much about what everything else looked like (as in the house)
Kirstin, sounds like you’ve got the “spontaneous” entertaining down! :)
You’re so right Sandy. I panic when people “pop in” and I’m not ready. But if they love me, they won’t mind the bit of clutter in the corner. I’m sure I’m the only one who notices it. These cheesecake parfaits sound amazing! It has me wishing it was summer already. Beautiful photos : )
Natalie, it really has taught me a lot, when people pop in and I’m not prepared. We can’t always be prepared, but it’s how we handle it, let our guard down (in a way), and quickly come up with a plan. And let the “stuff” that doesn’t really matter – go! :) Thanks for sharing!
Great post!!
I find that when I have a running tab of people into our home – that I don’t fret as much. Especially, if it’s folks I know – really well. However, if it’s been awhile and I’ve gotten out of the loop of having company – I can work myself into such a tizzy (fear of man!) over what my house looks like (in the moment!) or how the food will turn out.. etc.
Basically – practicing hospitality ( Romans 12:13) – doing it over and over and over… naturally allows us to focus on others and not just ourselves.
Great dessert!! thanks…
So true, entertaining is like a muscle. The more you do it, the more comfortable you are. Doing it over and over … great words and scripture!
First, these cute little desserts look amazing. Second, I totally relate — I am by nature a super clean and wannabe organized person. But life happens. And I agree that when I’m real and people in my home see that – I find often it is a huge blessing to them. It’s relatable. Third, I LOVE your Courtly Check dishes… it’s the pattern in my kitchen. Love!
Thanks, Kim. The MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check pattern is my favorite, too! Thanks for your words on when “life happens.” Eyes off ourselves, and on to others is key! :)
