Beyond how delicious this dip is, I love the fact that it can be served immediately without having to wait around for flavors to meld or the texture to set. That means you can whip up a bowl in just five minutes flat, right as guests are walking through the door! Easy tip: You can serve it chunky (unblended), or blend it for a minute to make it creamy. Either way is delicious!

It’s indulgent yet healthy; perfect for last-minute entertaining, busy weeknights, or anytime a craving for creamy, tangy ranch strikes with minimal effort. Grab your big board or a tray for a beautiful presentation.

ingredients to make Cottage Cheese Ranch Dip

Ingredients needed to make cottage cheese ranch dip

  • Cottage cheese: Lightens the texture while adding a good dose of healthy protein. I like to buy Good Culture 2% low-fat classic Cottage Cheese for this dip. I always find this at Safeway (but it sells out quickly).
  • Milk: Adds creamy flavor and helps to create the ideal consistency. Buttermilk can be used for additional tanginess, if desired.
  • Lemon juice: Balances the creamy richness of this dip and adds zesty brightness.
  • Ranch seasoning: You can buy packets or canisters, or I buy in the small glass jar at Trader Joe’s.
  • Freshly chopped chives: Brightens the dish with herbal freshness.
  • Small red cabbage: One small red cabbage plays the role of a creative container for this creamy dip. See the recipe directions below for full details. TIP: Use 2 cabbages and fill the 3rd half with more dip, and the last half with hummus!

How do you make cottage cheese ranch dip?

Combine dip ingredients:

  1. Right in the cottage cheese container, combine all of the ingredients and stir for 30 seconds. CREAMY STYLE: Optional to place in the blender and blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute until the cottage cheese is very smooth and creamy. Either way is delish!

Assemble on board or tray:

  1. Take a small red cabbage and cut it in half (core on the bottom half). TIP: Slice the red cabbage in half across the middle, not lengthwise, so one half has the core at the bottom. This makes it easier to scoop out the center and create a sturdy bowl for serving.
  2. Scoop out the center of each cabbage half to form veggie bowls that will hold the dip.
  3. Spoon the dip mixture into both cabbage bowls and place on a large board, surrounded by a mixture of vegetables (purple cauliflower, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, sliced, cucumber, sliced mini peppers, cut in half sliced celery and carrots, radishes, sliced Jicama, and pea pods), fresh dill, AND if you prefer, crackers, or chips.
  4. We like to keep it all veggies! Serve and enjoy!

Sandy’s tips and substitutions:

  • Storage: Store leftover cottage cheese ranch dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. I don’t recommend freezing this dip as the creamy texture can change.
  • Make-ahead: If you plan to make this dip ahead of serving, cover it in the mixing bowl tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge. Leave spooning into the red cabbage bowls just before serving. Give your cottage cheese dip a good stir and add a touch of milk, if needed.
  • Double the recipe: Make a double batch of this cottage cheese ranch dip when serving a larger crowd – perfect for your holiday parties and spring/summer gatherings.
  • How to use leftovers: Leftover cottage cheese ranch dip can be repurposed as a salad dressing or sauce by adding more liquid (white wine or water).
  • Stabilize the cabbage bowls: Slice a tiny bit off the bottom of each cabbage half so they sit flat on the board.
  • The Tray: We use this Better Homes & Gardens 16-Inch Natural Water Hyacinth Decorative Tray with Clear Acrylic Insert. For boards, you can see what we recommend, here.

Variations:

  • Creamy base: Make this dip with Greek yogurt if you don’t enjoy cottage cheese.
  • Optional to serve it chunky or creamy: For a quick recipe, add all ingredients right to the cottage cheese container and serve. For creamy – blend for a minute in the blender.
  • Mix-ins: Caramelized onions or crispy chopped bacon can be folded into this dip for delicious texture and depth of sweet and savory flavor. You can also experiment with garlic powder or onion powder.
  • Spicy kick: Add a touch of cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or diced jalapeños if you want a slightly spicy kick to this creamy cottage cheese dip.
  • Herbs swaps: Swap out the chives for your favorite herb. Parsley, thyme, or basil also works really well.
  • Adjust consistency: Add extra milk (1 teaspoon at a time) while stirring to create a thinner dip. For a thicker dip, add a bit more cottage cheese or a spoonful of plain Greek yogurt (which keeps it protein-rich).

  • 1 cup broccoli
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes
  • 1 English cucumber, sliced

Equipment

  • 1 Tray with Clear Acrylic Insert (washable)

Instructions

Make the dip:

  • Keep it chunky: Combine all of the ingredients right in the cottage cheese container and stir.
  • Taste for seasoning. Start with 1-2 Tbsp of Ranch seasoning, and add more if needed.
  • Sprinkle with fresh chives and garnish with dill sprig.
  • Make it creamy: Follow instructions above, but add the milk, Ranch seasoning, and lemon in a food processor and blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute until the cottage cheese is very smooth and creamy.
