Tips and substitutions:

  • Make in advance: You can make this up to 3 days in advance. Just don’t top it with the toasted Panko until right before serving.
  • Dairy-free: To make a dairy-free version, substitute the sour cream, cream cheese, and butter for non-dairy alternatives.
  • Relish: You can use relish if you need to, but we prefer fresh chopped pickles. The consistency is just not the same with relish (or the crunchiness).
  • Gluten-free: Make it gluten-free and substitute the Panko for gluten-free breadcrumbs.
  • Dill: Swap out the fresh dill for your favorite dill (but we do think dill pickles go best with fresh dill).
