Why I love this recipe
- I love having fun with my food, and these adorable Frog Sandwiches are as fun to make as they are to eat!
- You can make these ahead of time—they make the perfect lunch or light dinner.
- Everyone oohs and ahhs over these jazzed-up ham and pickle sandwiches!
Gather these ingredients
- Bakery-fresh buns – You’ll need 24 sandwich-size buns.
- Provolone cheese – 12 slices, cut into half..
- Sliced ham – 24 slices of thick deli-sliced ham.
- Dill pickles – 24 dill pickles, sliced in long pieces..
- Green olives – 24 green olives, cut in half.
- Mayonnaise
You’ll also need
- Toothpicks
- A large platter or board – I love serving these sammies on my 12×24-inch Big Board.
How to make the best Frog Sandwich Board
- Gently press the buns with your hand or a large spatula to flatten them a bit before cutting them so that the tops are flatter.
- Cut the buns in half horizontally.
- Spread the mayonnaise in a thin layer on each cut half of the bun.
- Fold over a piece of ham and add it to the bun, topping it with a slice of cheese.
- Add a pickle slice to look like the frog’s tongue, then press down lightly on the top of the bun to hold the pickle in place.
- Place 2 toothpicks in each sandwich where the eyes will go. Add ½ olive to each toothpick to create the eyes.
- Repeat until all the sandwiches are made, and arrange them on a large plate or board.
- Add your favorite chips to the board, some ranch dip for dipping, and serve!
Tips & substitutions
- Feel free to jazz up your sandwiches. You can use a different cheese, like Swiss or cheddar, or sweet pickles instead of dill. Just don’t overfill the sandwiches—you want them to stay closed.
- Love mustard? Add Dijon or yellow mustard to the sandwiches, in addition to the mayonnaise. Just ensure no mustard peeks out from the inside of the sandwich.
- Prep these sandwiches up to a few hours in advance. Cover them with plastic wrap and keep them in the fridge until ready to serve.
- I love serving chips with sandwiches, but crudites— or cut-up veggies—also work well.
