Friends, today is launch day for our new cookbook! This board features one of my absolute favorite recipes from my new book, Reluctant Entertainer’s Big Boards and More, Tamarind and Lemongrass Milk-Braised Pork–served on The Big Board. It’s so hearty, comforting, and good for Fall. You can halve the recipe or make it for a crowd!

Why we love this Milk-Braised Pork recipe

The pork shoulder is braised in tart tamarind paste, sweet honey, a myriad of aromatics, and a secret ingredient: whole milk. The final result is decadently juicy braised pork, with bold flavor. Although it is a Southeast Asian-inspired recipe, it is SO good in burritos, quesadillas, tacos, and even grilled cheeses.

You can serve this in a Dutch oven (with a side of rice), or serve it on the board. You may also want to try our BBQ Pork Slider Board if you love pork!

Here’s the gorgeous recipe in our new cookbook!

Tamarind and Lemongrass Milk-Braised Pork Board

On this board, I threw together all of my favorite fixings to make rice bowls. Rice acts as the foundation of the bowls, the fresh fruits and veggies add crunch and freshness to the rich pork, pickled red onion and sweet chili sauce add some heat and brightness, and herbs add a much needed earthiness to the mix.

Toppings and chopsticks

It’s all about the toppings! Set out the toppings right on the board. Optional to serve with chopsticks (or on the side with forks, bowls, etc:) The beauty of boards is that you can make them your own, and arrange them in whatever style you want.

How do you make a Milk-Braised Pork Board

I love the art of putting together a board, making sure I have a variety of ingredients to fill it out, however, you never have to fill every space on the board to use it!

  1. Make ahead the pork recipe.
  2. While simmering on the stove, make the white rice.
  3. Assemble the toppings on the board, leaving room for a hot pad and the large pot of Milk Braised Pork.

Serve!

Tips and substitutions:

  • Trader Joe’s is great for buying three minute, frozen rice (white and brown). It’s great to keep in the freezer and microwave for when I need to put dinner together quickly.
  • Some other ideas for ingredients to swap out or add to the board are shishito peppers, bok choy, green cabbage, and cauliflower, pickled daikon, kimchi, and peanut sauce.
  • When serving the pork on the board, keep the lid on the hot dutch oven until right before serving.
  • Remove the lid right before ready to dig in!

How do you serve a board with milk braised pork?

Remember, when assembling the board, always use a hot pad under the baking dish.

Using a heavy bottom baking dish keeps the meat warm as guests fix their plates.
