Baked Bermuda Onion Dip
Baked Bermuda Onion Dip is an old-fashioned baked cheesy onion dip best served with potato chips, crackers, or on a baked potato. Delish!
You may have grown up enjoying chips and Baked Bermuda Onion Dip like I did. It’s basically a sour cream base with onion dip, and it’s the best with potato chips.
But wait … can you even buy Bermuda onions in the store anymore? They say not, but for this recipe, we used “sweet Vildalia Onions” because they are not only sweet, but they make this dip so good. I mean, who doesn’t love a good onion dip?
Baked Bermuda Onion Dip
We also swapped out the sour cream base for mayo, cream cheese, and 3 other kinds of cheese: sharp cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss cheese. When we visited Viking Cruises Bermuda Escape last year, I do not recall any recipe like this served on the ship or in town, when we delighted in Bermuda’s cuisine. HA.
Ingredients for Baked Bermuda Onion Dip
Let’s get started with these easy ingredients:
- Bermuda onion (or large sweet onion, like Vildalia)
- Mayonnaise
- Cream cheese
- Sharp cheddar cheese
- Mozzarella cheese
- Swiss cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh chives, thinly sliced (or green onion)
- Dark crackers on one side and pita chips on the other
How do you make Baked Bermuda Onion Dip?
- Spray an 8×8 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- Place softened cream cheese, diced onion, and mayo in a medium size mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
- Add cheddar, mozzarella, and Swiss cheese to the bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste, then mix to combine all of the ingredients.
- Spoon into baking dish and bake. You want the top of the dip to be lightly browned.
- Sprinkle very finely chopped fresh chives or green onions on top.
How do you serve a hot Bermuda dip?
Serve with your choice of cracker or pita chip!
Can you also serve in a hot baked potato (just slice it open, and spoon the dip right into the potato). Then sprinkle with finely chopped fresh chives or green onions. Better yet, serve it on a Baked Potato Board.
Then of course, take a bite with your favorite cracker or pita chips.
What is a Bermuda onion?
The name Bermuda onion originates from when the onions were first grown in the Bermuda Islands. It’s a large, bulb-shaped, white and yellow, drier onion that has a sweet, mild flavor.
Can you still buy Bermuda onions?
Bermuda onions are not available anymore in stores or markets, but seed is still kept for breeding purposes, and home gardeners can grow them. They are also still a patriotic favorite on the island of Bermuda.
In most markets today, Bermuda onions have been replaced by various sweet onions from Texas, Washington, Peru and by Vidalia onions (my favorite).
