This recipe contains apples and carrots, which your pet is sure to love, so let’s dive head first into these Easy Carrot + Apple Dog Treats!
- Whole wheat flour
- Oats (you can use gluten-free)
- Brown sugar, optional if your dog doesn’t like sugar
- Apple + carrots
- Egg
- Vegetable oil
- Water
How to make Apple Carrot Dog Treats
This recipe makes 12-24 dog biscuits, depending on the size of your cookie cutter.
- Core and grate apples; peel and grate carrots (I used food processor).
- Mix the dry ingredients together.
- In separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the oil, water, and grated apples and carrots. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix completely.
- Carefully roll ‘dough’ out and cut out desired shape with a small cookie cutter.
- Bake until biscuits are firm.

Alder the Whoodle (poodle and wheaten terrier) is almost 6 years old now. He’s all about dog treats! Here he is in our Sprinter Van, camping on the OR coast. Yes, he sleeps with us.
When guests come over (which we have regularly), for our breed of dog, it’s good to have dog treats ready. Alder is rambunctious and loves to “greet” our friends, so we’ve learned to keep a few treats in our pockets.

It’s for all you fellow dog-lovers out there, and perfect for gift-giving season!
Tips and substitutions:
Be sure to core your apple before grating. Apple seeds aren’t good for dogs!
Use a small cookie cutter for 20-24 biscuits.
You make as you would any other cookie, using your favorite shaped cookie cutter. We love the heart cookie-cutter, but you can use a shamrock, tree, egg, bunny–think about the holidays coming up.
Make, bake, and allow to cool.
One reader used half almond flour and half all-purpose flour, adding 1 1/2 teaspoon of flax seeds, and they turned out great.
You can bake ahead and freeze.
The perfect doggie treats gifts
Stack the treats, and tie together with a big bow. Place in brown paper bags (you can decorate, or buy decorated bags), and GIVE AWAY!
You can also spoil your own pooch with a bit of extra pizazz added to their stockings – homemade dog treats!
How to store homemade dog biscuits
- Store in air-tight container.
- Optional to freeze!
- Serving size: makes 20-24 small dog biscuits.

How to Make Apple Carrot Dog Biscuits
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cup whole wheat flour
- ½ cup oats
- 1 TBSP brown sugar, optional if your dog doesn't like sugar
- 1 apple, cored and grated (leave peel on)
- ½ cup carrots, peeled and grated
- 1 egg, beaten
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ - ½ cup water, note: the apples add moisture, so only add extra water if necessary
Equipment
- Baking sheet (Gold Touch baking sheets are super durable)
- Food processor (This is the food processor I use all the time)
- Rolling Pin (I like this easy-to-roll model)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 and grease a cookie sheet.
- Core and grate apples; peel and grate carrots (I used a food processor).
- In one bowl, mix the flour, oats, and brown sugar. In separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the oil, water, and grated apples and carrots. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients bowl and mix completely.
- Carefully roll ‘dough’ out and cut out desired shape with a small cookie cutter.
- Bake for 40 – 45 minutes, or until apple juices are soaked and biscuits are firm.
- After biscuits cool, feel free to share with the pups in your life! Store in air-tight container.
- Serving size: makes 20-24 small dog biscuits.

LOL oh my god….. right after I hit submit I know my error >.< I measured the flour using a 1/2 thing and only did 3 instead of 5 of them, ahahaha… well then!!! I am not a rookie but no means a pro either (clearly!)
I have a batch of these in the oven as I type this. I didn’t measure my carrot because frankly I didn’t care, just did a whole carrot lol. I added a about 1/8th cup of water but when I roll it out and try and cut with a cutter it is just mush, now I am figuring it to be too much carrot (juicy) or maybe I didn’t need water at all, But I added the water before the dry ingredients, even after reading all comments and whatnot LOL, my dogs are standing at the oven as if they know, however I have never made them their own cookies before…..I didn’t have whole wheat flour either so I just took oats and made them into flour in the food processor.I hope they work because I always have apples and carrots that need help being used, mainly because I buy in bulk to save a bit LOL, aka waste money by throwing out excess >.<

What a great recipe…and post! I’ve pinned it and will definitely make these for my pup Leala! I made done treats in Christmas for her, Whole Wheat Herb Biscuits with Flax, I haven’t gotten around to saying much on my blog, but the recipe is there if you’d like to try it! :)
Mine kept pretty well for 1 week. I may try freezing half the batch next time around to make them last longer.

I think you could definitely experiment with different flours! Just be mindful of the consistency as the apples add a lot of moisture, and add more or less as needed.
I just made these and used half Almond flour and half all purpose flour. Also put a teaspoon and a half of flax seeds in it. They turned out beautiful….I even ate a couple….is that bad?

YUM! I’m going to try these for our puppy. We have a 9 month lab and she loves her treats. Do you think I could replace the flour with rice flour?
I bet you could replace the flour for rice flour! I would just keep an eye on the texture and add more flour as needed as the apples make the dough very moist. The great thing about dogs is – they will eat it no matter what it looks like! Ha! Let me know how they turn out if you try it with rice flour.
I am making these today for our puppy! My daughter got a “Bake-A-Bone” treat maker from her grandparents so we thought we’d give it a shot. I will have to try them rolled out how you did them next time. I did use rice flour. Here are the changes I made and they seem to have worked well…I straight out substituted the Brown Rice Flour for the reg. flour, added 2 Tbs. baking powder. I was using the BAke-A-Bone recipes as a guide and they all called for baking powder and a slightly runnier consistency so I did add more water. Not sure I would need as much baking powder if I was rolling them out, but the BAB treats are supposed to rise within the mold. They smell so yummy! Getting ready to harden in the oven soon.
I cannot handle that sweet puppy face! OH MY GOODNESS!!! Makes me want more dogs…and more babies!!! (my husband would flip if he read this right now…)
