- Whole wheat flour
- Oats (you can use gluten-free)
- Brown sugar, optional if your dog doesn’t like sugar
- Apple + carrots
- Egg
- Vegetable oil
- Water
How to make Apple Carrot Dog Treats
This recipe makes 12-24 dog biscuits, depending on the size of your cookie cutter.
- Core and grate apples; peel and grate carrots (I used food processor).
- Mix the dry ingredients together.
- In separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the oil, water, and grated apples and carrots. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix completely.
- Carefully roll ‘dough’ out and cut out desired shape with a small cookie cutter.
- Bake until biscuits are firm.

When guests come over (which we have regularly), for our breed of dog, it’s good to have dog treats ready. Alder is rambunctious and loves to “greet” our friends, so we’ve learned to keep a few treats in our pockets.

Tips and substitutions:
Be sure to core your apple before grating. Apple seeds aren’t good for dogs!
Use a small cookie cutter for 20-24 biscuits.
You make as you would any other cookie, using your favorite shaped cookie cutter. We love the heart cookie-cutter, but you can use a shamrock, tree, egg, bunny–think about the holidays coming up.
Make, bake, and allow to cool.
One reader used half almond flour and half all-purpose flour, adding 1 1/2 teaspoon of flax seeds, and they turned out great.
You can bake ahead and freeze.
The perfect doggie treats gifts
Stack the treats, and tie together with a big bow. Place in brown paper bags (you can decorate, or buy decorated bags), and GIVE AWAY!
You can also spoil your own pooch with a bit of extra pizazz added to their stockings – homemade dog treats!

- Store in air-tight container.
- Optional to freeze!

How to Make Apple Carrot Dog Biscuits
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cup whole wheat flour
- ½ cup oats
- 1 TBSP brown sugar, optional if your dog doesn't like sugar
- 1 apple, cored and grated (leave peel on)
- ½ cup carrots, peeled and grated
- 1 egg, beaten
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- ¼ - ½ cup water, note: the apples add moisture, so only add extra water if necessary
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350 and grease a cookie sheet.
- Core and grate apples; peel and grate carrots (I used food processor).
- In one bowl, mix the flour, oats, and brown sugar. In separate bowl, beat the egg and mix in the oil, water, and grated apples and carrots. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients bowl and mix completely.
- Carefully roll ‘dough’ out and cut out desired shape with a small cookie cutter.
- Bake for 40 – 45 minutes, or until apple juices are soaked and biscuits are firm.
- After biscuits cool, feel free to share with the pups in your life! Store in air-tight container.
- Serving size: makes 20-24 small dog biscuits.

Do they need to be stored in the fridge?
No they don’t.
I’m wondering if I can use “oat flour” (ground quick oats) instead of whole wheat flour.
Yes you can!
Can you substitute cinnamon instead of brown sugar?
I have not tried that.
I made these to fit into our dog’s “everlasting treat”holder which looks like an orange half-ball. These treats (cut with the right siz e cutter) fit in there and keep him busy. He loves them! Thanks for the easy recipe! I baked them so they are nice and golden brown, a little longer.
Is it a half a cup of carrots after they are grated or before they are grated?
After grated.
I will be making these tomorrow. Can you give me a expiration time on these. How long are the good for in a sealed container.
I’ve kept them up to 2 weeks, but it’s what you feel comfortable with. You can freeze for much longer, too!

I used 3 Tbsp honey instead of brown sugar & added a smidgen more apple and carrot (about 1.5 apple & 1c. carrot) just to make the biscuit a bit sweeter and not so starchy. I also rolled little doughballs instead of cookie cutting & My picky pooch pulverized these things!! I wanted to see what the hype was all about & let me tell you…..I was floored by these dog doughballs!! They were flippin awesome!! MOST DEFINITELY could of used these years on your 2 & 4-legged babies!! Very palatable indeed!

Do you know the fat content? Our dog has to stay on a low fat diet. The oil concerns me in this recipe

I haven’t tried pumpkin, so I do not know if it would work in this recipe.
My grand-doggy absolutely loved the cookies, she would not stop sticking her tongue out as a sign the cookies are very good. I highly recommend this cookies, you really get a lot of cookies, you can give away some or cut the recipe to 3/4 cup of flour and divide the ingredientes accordingly.
My dog is allergic to eggs, what else can I use?

Aquafaba, which is the juice in a can of garbanzo beans, is a substitute for eggs. I freeze it on in ice cube trays. Three cubes equals one egg. It also make great meringue. Odd, I know, but look it up on the web.
applesauce is a replacement of eggs toom unsweeten.
Mix 1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water let sit few minutes to thicken.
I substituted 4oz of unsweetened applesauce for the egg as my pup has an egg allergy (among a ton of other stuff). Then I had to eyeball the water to get a good dough consistency that would roll out thin. The pup LOVES them. Thinking about adding blueberries next time…

This recipe is awesome, I did 2 cups flour instead of 2 1/2 I didn’t add any water and I added 2 table spoons of natural peanut butter the liquid one and did 1/4 cup of oil instead of 1/3 ..the mix was perfect I didn’t need to add anything else . They taste so good I just over baked them so I will be eating the one I over baked with hummus they are so good . thank you great recipe
