Happy Mother’s Day Weekend!

With Mother’s Day right here this weekend (how did it sneak up on me so quickly?), and missing my own mama so, I think about our kids, who I love dearly.

Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed Board

Breakfast in bed is a traditional Mother’s day activity, so today we are sharing a Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed Board. There is nothing better than being woken up (after sleeping in, of course) to your favorite people, holding a board of your favorite foods, drink, and flowers.

Although this board is meant just for one person, I also think that making a larger board (like my 12 x 36″ rectangle board, or even my 26’’ circular board) full of mom’s favorite things could make for a cozy, family style breakfast in bed celebration.

And how did Abby know that these Ranunculus (Persian Buttercup) are my favorite flowers? So elegant and fluffy and perfectly made!

What to add to a Mother’s Day Board

Be creative and add your favorite things for mom. Here’s what we added:

  • Pink flowers
  • Pancakes smothered in a sweet ricotta frosting with berries
  • Melon
  • Oven-baked bacon
  • Crispy fried eggs
  • Avocado with lemon juice and pepper

You can even add a copy of Big Boards for Families, which is still Editor’s Pick on Amazon!

My mom Millie

I love this picture of my mom, Millie, and me:

My mom has been gone for 18 years now, and today I had a new revelation. I think when my mom left this earth, I became a stronger, more courageous person. Not only did mom show me much about love and life, the day she stepped into heaven was the day that my wings grew a little bit more. I didn’t have my mom to rely on, so I expanded my world and reached out to other women, who today I dearly think of as my moms, each in their own special way.

mom and me

I was 34 when mom passed away from cancer, a young mama with 3 little kids, Abby not even 1 yet. She was a bright spot to mom, in her last days and hours. Her eyes lit up when we’d place Abby’s 9-month old chubby body onto mom’s tummy, which would in turn reveal a very big smile from mom. Big, beautiful smiles of love. [Above, Mom and me in 1963; below, bringing Abby home from the hospital in 1996.]

It’s difficult to explain the mix of emotions when you are being stretched, with one arm raised to heaven, losing the core and center of your life–someone you love so dearly, and then one arm hanging down, being pulled by six little hands, grasping tightly from so many directions, saying we need you, we need you!

Isn’t it amazing that we get a day just to celebrate the most wonderful job in the world?

I love being a mother, and I’ll always think back to how my own mom must have felt. And now I’m the mom to these three great kids, Elliot, Garrett and Abigail (all in their 20’s now) – my greatest gifts in life.

Happy Mother’s Day to all my wonderful friends! I hope you enjoy your day!
