Strawberry Quinoa Salad

Being a seasoned hostess, I’ve learned that hosting a dinner party is an opportunity for bringing people together to create togetherness. This Easter dinner, where we served Strawberry Quinoa Salad with Fresh Basil, happened four years ago at our last home in Medford, Oregon.

In our backyard with family and friends, we served a traditonal Easter dinner of ham, potatoes (love these Potato Gratin Muffin Stacks), lots of salads, and plenty of desserts. Desserts like this 5-ingredient Frozen Strawberry Royale, and No Bake Chocolate Easter Egg Cookies!

I whipped up one of my favorite quinoa salads, Strawberry Quinoa Salad with Fresh Basil.

There’s nothing quite like strawberries and fresh basil that says “summer!”

Life is best

I think about what food means to us – as a society, as friends and family, and as a community, and how the nourishment of it changes our lives. I’m sure you have your own stories of sharing food and recipes with others in your home.

What makes me sad is that to many, dinner parties or eating together only center around a holiday meal (or birthday celebration).

I wish we didn’t always have a “reason” to host a dinner party!

Plan the menu, ask guests to contribute, and make-ahead some easy recipes, like this Strawberry Quinoa Salad with Fresh Basil.

Set the table

For this outdoor Easter dinner, we set a very simple table with springy flowers, my favorite Le Creuset dishes, Mason green and blue jars for glasses, and IKEA purple napkins.

The day couldn’t have been better.

The food was delicious, the weather was absolutely gorgeous, we mingled, savored our time together, and I will admit, it was hard to say goodbye.

What are your thoughts on “potluck” and everyone contributing to the meal?

  4. Good morning! I love potlucks. People feel a sense of belonging when they make a contribution to a gathering. They also have pride in bringing a dish that they have made with love. Potlucks also take away some of the anxiety a host may have regarding putting together a big meal together.

By the way Sandy, I just love your new haircut:-)

  5. Beautiful post, Sandy! Loving your hair and that gorgeous dress :)

  6. Hi Sandy – I just wanted to let you know how inspired I always am by your posts. I hosted 2 brunches this week at my house. Granted, they were for a birthday and Easter, but I’m gaining confidence and realizing it doesn’t have to be perfect and I don’t have to do it all. I already have a couple activities planned here in the next week or so! Thanks for your words of encouragement.

  7. What a lovely combo of ingredients. I personally love fresh basil. Many years I grow it. It is so cool to go out and pick fresh herbs. I also use strawberries in all kinds of salads. However I realize I have never put basil and strawberries together before. I hear you about food and people and the joy when that comes together. Smiles to you.

  8. I’m SO making that dressing. I need new flavors, and that is the best ever. I heart basil!

  13. I love potlucks. It’s how we always do family gatherings, and since we’re looking to feed 40+, it’s really helpful in getting rid of some of the burden of cooking for and hosting that many people. Looks like you had a wonderful time!
